Sounds like you've been hanging out with some pretty boring and dull people, OP.

I loved Mork and Mindy and followed his career since then. Hook was my favorite.

He was great with that sappy stuff and that's probably what a lot of people liked about him, for the feel good. They didn't expect great Oscar performances. And that's why the reaction to his death seems so over the top. It's a shock to learn that someone who made a lot of people happy was so depressed himself. I'm sure they would rather him be alive and happy. Nothing Johnny-come-lately about it.
