Some of us aren't Johnny-come-latelys. I had a huge crush on him back in his Mork and Mindy days, and watched films like Mrs. Doubtfire and Dead Poet's Society primarily because he was in them.

A lot of people have very fond memories of him as the Genie from Aladdin, too.

I think a lot of people (myself included) were shocked at the suddenness of his death. He just seemed so vital, like a force of nature almost.

Pretty much this. Maybe you have to be 30+ to really get it, but Robin Williams played so many characters that (I know it sounds cheesy) had a strong impact on my life and thinking. Not to mention he was just entertaining as hell, and I also had no idea whatsoever that he suffered from depression. Maybe it shouldn't have been so shocking, but it really was.

Word! My story's similar. I was 10 when Hook came out in '91 and I had the absolute biggest crush on Robin's Peter Pan. That crazy messy windswept hair and the piercing blue eyes and the FLYING. Sigh. So much love. Over the years I followed Robin's stand up and fell in love all over again.

Um...what kind of people were YOU hanging around? Everyone I know loves him in some form or another.

And anyone who says Patch Adams is CRAP can bite my fucking ass. I love that movie. In fact, every movie I've seen of his was really good.

I sorta think that last part may have made this secret a troll one.

So...4/10 I guess.

I always liked him. Some people hated his hyper-hummingbird style routines but I liked them. I will admit he's done some shit movies but the ones I love hold a special place in my heart, so I did feel sad at his passing.

I've always liked his comedies. Yes, all of them. He genuinely makes me smile. I didn't like his serious stuff so much. But Mork and Mindy has always been one of my favorite shows. And yes, his death hit me hard for a whole host of reasons.

I got the opposite impression. Most people I knew loved him overall, but were willing to criticize when it was applicable.

In any case, the fact that he died doesn't mean that his work is no longer open to critique. The work and the person aren't the same.

Well, obviously you got the wrong impression then. Even people who made fun of his movies (and you yourself freely admit that some of them are terrible and thus presumably worthy of some derision) may have liked him a lot.

And it's not like people need to be vocal about liking someone in order to feel sad about them dying, jeez. Especially since it was a suicide. I usually don't care hardly at all about celebrity deaths, but seriously, cut people some slack.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
even before his death I never heard a bad thing said about him, maybe about some of his movies, but that's every actor. Idg where you were hearing people's general opinion about him as being obnoxious.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Generally when celebrities die, people aren't mourning the loss of the person so much as the talent and potential of the artist who can no longer produce the art they enjoy. Robin Williams may well have lived to make nothing but shitty movies until he was 90, but we don't know that - he may have also made some extraordinary, award-winning films that meant as much to people as Good Morning Vietnam and Mrs. Doubtfire and Hook and Good Will Hunting. But now, because he's dead, we'll never know. We'll never see those potential performances.

Same with Whitney Houston/Michael Jackson/PSH/Heath Ledger/insert morally dubious celebrity here. Even if they weren't terrific people, they were all famous for having an impact on their audience's lives with their art. Maybe people feel guilty for not appreciating them more when they were still around, so they talk them up a bit and share nostalgic memories while the point of said celebrity's passing is relevant.

Sounds like you've been hanging out with some pretty boring and dull people, OP.

I loved Mork and Mindy and followed his career since then. Hook was my favorite.

He was great with that sappy stuff and that's probably what a lot of people liked about him, for the feel good. They didn't expect great Oscar performances. And that's why the reaction to his death seems so over the top. It's a shock to learn that someone who made a lot of people happy was so depressed himself. I'm sure they would rather him be alive and happy. Nothing Johnny-come-lately about it.

Exsqueeze me, OP? I had Reality...What a Concept practically memorized.

I don't know why people in this thread are acting like you're literally referring to them, op. It's true that there were a lot of people who openly disliked RW, and while I didn't hang around them, I'm sure some of them are now claiming to like him and it sounds phony, which can be irritating.

I agree that some (many) of RW's movies just aren't that good - but please watch "The Fisher King" if you haven't seen it. He thoroughly deserved the Oscar nomination he received for that one.

I think most people thought he was talented and were fond of him because he really was in a lot of iconic roles, but at the same time they acknowledged he'd mostly been in crap the last decade or so.

"Ugh, Robin Williams is so talented. Why has he only been in stuff like License to Wed recently?" That kind of thing.

First saw him in Mork and Mindy and was wowed. Saw his stand-up - loved it. Patch Adams is a suckfest. I'd watch The Fisherking any day, any time. It's been awesome to see him go from comedy only to some amazing, emotional stuff.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not going to claim to have loved everything he did. I'm not even going to say that I'm a huge fan or that he defined my childhood. I liked a number of his movies growing up, and they were memorable and, some, touching. Some of his films were better than others.

But when I heard of his death - namely, how it came about, including his battle with depression - I'll admit I felt incredibly sad about it. Not because I was a huge fan or because I thought he was the end all, be all of comedy. Not because I felt any sort of "guilt" for not having liked some of his films. I felt sad because a person had taken his own life. That is tragic, no matter how you feel about the person. Yes, those feelings were exacerbated by the fact that he was someone I connected with comedy and with making me laugh, but it' still a tragedy and fuck you for trying to turn it into something that it's not.

I'm not going to lie, I thought he was kind of creepy. Then again, he also did Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting. It was the way he died that affected me.

Collective guilt always comes up whenever some celebrity dies. But that doesn't mean there wasn't a whole lot of love, or that people didn't appreciate the celeb's work.

I never had one bad thing to think or say about Robin Williams or his movies. He amused or impressed me in everything I ever saw him in. And I suspect that includes movies you think are crap.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 04:06 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, I liked a lot of Robin Williams' stuff. Not all of it, but a lot. And Patch Adams wasn't a cinematic triumph or anything, but it wasn't THAT bad.

op, YOUR DEATH ARE CRAP...

OP: This wasn’t directed at anyone who really liked him and are grieving.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 11:13 am (UTC)(link)
It's good to hear he was more genuinely loved than I thought and I hope he's chilling on some cloud listening to it all, but I just hate how whenever a celebrity dies they suddenly could do no wrong and are beyond criticism even to people who didn't seem to be that fond of them before. When Heath Ledger died I remember some gossip boards I was at going from "Asshole. Made some decent flicks" to "ZOMG GREATEST ACTOR OF HIS GENERATION! NATIONAL TREASURE! LOSS TO HUMANITY!" and running out anyone who thought differently. I'm just like... Robin Williams wasn't for everyone. If you didn't like him it's okay and you don't need to pretend otherwise just because of him dying.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-27 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I always loathed him - his work, not him, himself, as I knew absolutely nothing about him as a person.

Obviously I am not happy that he died, or to find out that an actor I considered talentless and irritating was so unhappy. The "I considered talentless and irritating" is very minor, compared to someone's actual death.

I have posted nothing about it - I'm not jumping on bandwagons - my daughter said, "Robin WIlliams died - didn't you always hate him", and I said, "oh, well, yes, but I'm not happy he died!"
