Kindle alternatives, clones, little cousins?

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2014-08-27 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Basically I want something to read on, a lot of it will be fanfic and short stories. I'd like to just be able to read your average PDF files on it, preferable multiple formats even, and I know this is an issue with Kindle.

My friend has a Kobo and it looks good, but ideally it would also be cheaper, but I'm not even sure this mythical thing eve exists..

anything cheaper than kindle and kobo is probably crap tbh

I worked in a store that sold generic e-readers and people returned them alllll the time because they didn't work

Well that's good to know!

I bought a Nook SimpleTouch used off somebody for cheap--it wasn't borked or anything, they just didn't care for the look/functionality of it...whereas it's perfect for me. I think the really basic Nooks are pretty cheap even new, and while I think it takes PDFs you can also really easy manage/convert your library with the Calibre ebook manager.

I think it's between seventy and ninety dollars. So it's not bad as electronics go. I have one and like it quite well.

I've never had a problem with PDFs on my Kindle fire. And I was able to make it work back when I had the basic Kindle.

Make it work as in you had to adjust it, or it just displayed them?

No, I just had to make sure to get PDFs that were readable. Some were a bit hard to read, so those ones I'd convert to MOBI in Calibre.

I have an older generation Nook and reading pdfs is kind of hit or miss. I inherited it, so it was free, but if it died I'd probably get a tablet instead. They're much more flexible.

Just to say, whatever device you get (assuming android) there's always apps that let you read a variety of file formats, you don't necessarily need to use the default one.

SA

And to add, the reader apps are much better than the actual default reader/library. Way more options for sorting and stuff like that.

If there's no whacky formatting in the pdf, it should be perfectly fine to convert them to your Kindle.

I'm using a Kindle (like the normal one) and a program called calibre to convert anything not supported.
