Martha hate is super frustrating.

I also am really fond of Clara and don't get the hate for her at all.

It's because she's a plot hook masquerading as a character who did a 180 in personality in the new series.

I mean... being 'a plot hook masquerading as a character' is true for like... most of Moffat's characters, especially if they're women.

As far as the 180 on her character, I don't think that's quite true. I think that she's still basically the same. The text is TELLING us "control freak!" but I'm not getting that from the actual writing. So idk.

I just think Jenna is really charming and a good actress. I think she's able to elevate the material that she's given which is maybe why I do like Clara so much.

nayrt

I think Clara, as a character, suffered a lot from the production issues that Moffat-era Who has constantly struggled with and the lost season. I think the show has just never been able to consistently depict her character as a control freak even though that's consistently what they've had in mind apparently.

IA that Jenna is really charming and I'm comfortable with her just being charming and having adventures, though. TBH that's all I really ask from main characters on Who - be charismatic enough that I enjoy watching them fuck around.

Yes, this. I found her arc last series so annoying, and she's inconsistently written, but Coleman herself is just so good—I can't even put my finger on why, though "charming" is probably the word I'd use too—that she manages to make what would otherwise be a grating character fun to watch, and contradicts a lot of the badly written stuff.

I hope they give her decent material to work with this time around. I'm optimistic that it might happen.

Bathing in Martha-love

I don't get the Martha hate. She's a doctor who's capable of kicking alien ass, but prefers to be kind; like, she offers to comfort the woman the Doctor wanted to marry in the episodes with those creepy scarecrows (I forgot the name of the episode and the character) even after the woman said some pretty horrible comments about her race and gender.

Clara...meh, if it weren't for Coleman's performance, I think I would hate her, too. She's just so boring.
