[Jackie Chan Adventures]

Yeah, I remember when I found out. Totally crushed my world.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, this is like when I found out the Beatles didn't do their own voices in Yellow Submarine!

ANOTHER JCA SECRET!!! hell yes.

To be fair, James Sie is a heck of a voice actor.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
He doesn't actually speak English very well, he just memorizes his lines. I'd imagine voicing an entire series would be too hard.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh... Pretty sure I've seen talk show interviews with him and while it's clear English isn't his first language, he doesn't have to memorize lines like a robot for that.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
He memorizes his lines phonetically.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Naw, he's not that badly off, he does understand what he's saying and what others are saying to him. He just flubs our grammar and vocabulary at times, especially if the delivery needs to be snappy.

Jackie's EMPIRE podcast interview!

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Listen to his recent EMPIRE podcast interview recorded in front of a live audience where he talks about his latest film, the movie business, stunt work, etc. His English is fine and actually adorable (and he talks so fast, which isn't easy to do in a foreign language!), he even admits his English used to be worse in the past when he first got started and that it's still not very good, but that's just Jackie being insecure, like someone else had already pointed out. Everyone in the audience LOVED him, as did the podcasters.

Like Jackie said once: "Everyone adore me." :D

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think this is true and I'm beginning to side eye you a bit because it feels like you're assuming his accent means he doesn't actually know how to speak English. Speaking as someone who has many Asian relatives who speak heavily accented English, it's unlikely to be that extreme. Also, if he's appearing on talk shows where the interviews are going to be more off the cuff, memorizing your lines phonetically isn't even possible.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
His English is probably a little better than my parents, who are also Asian, but I'm pretty sure he's just insecure since there are a lot of people who expect everyone to speak with perfect English. From what I've read, when Jackie first tried breaking into the US movie industry, he was told that audiences were put off by his lack of "good" English skills. There are some people who have a hard time understanding what people say when someone speaks with an accent, but that's not the fault of the person with the accent. I've always felt like Jackie Chan feels like it's something people can't overlook, but honestly, I think the majority of his fans who speak English don't care.

TBH I don't think his English is that bad. I think his English is easy enough to understand when he does interviews.

It's the same thing as when people complained that they couldn't understand Ken Wantanabe in "Inception". It wasn't as bad as people were claiming it to be.

He's also an incredibly busy person. It seems like he always is doing some project of some sort at all times.

I think I managed to forget this...

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember when I watched that show when I was growing up, I kept thinking "He looks nothing like Jackie Chan." I really enjoyed the show though; I've always loved shows based around collecting things.

Well, guess I learned something new today.

Dammit OP, why couldn't you let me live in ignorance? :(

Yeah, I hadn't known either. I guess it's not surprising, but I never realized it.

Well, I learned something today.

Aaaaaaaaaand there goes the rest of my childhood.

I just found this out a week ago - also because someone posted the secret - and was devastated.

But then I found out Hak Foo was voiced by John diMaggio and everything was okay again.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
It was, however, his idea, I believe, and he had a big hand in it.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm amused by all the people surprised by this. My family started watching Jackie Chan movies right about the time he started speaking English or re dubbing his older movies, so it was painfully obvious to me as a kid that dude sounded nothing like him.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
I don't want to spoil your lofty amusement, but not everyone who watched JCA also watched his live action movies, so how were we supposed to know?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
He used to do a short segment of live-action interview at the end of some episodes and it was pretty obvious that he wasn't doing the voiceacting for his character then, either.

My childhood is a lie. I guess as a kid it never occurred to me that anyone else but Jackie would voice Jackie.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2014-08-29 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
I knew this since the first episode. I was disappointed.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I found this out at some point and my reaction was basically "oh, so THAT's why he sounds so different in the 'Ask Jackie' live interview segments!"

(myself, two siblings, and both parents watched this show whenever possible when I was growing up. JCA secret FTW!)
