[Starsky and Hutch]

(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Starsky doesn't care, so why should I?"

I think that for viewers, this tends to be easier said than done. If you really connect with a character, just thinking "okay, but this guy's not me, he's not bothered by these things" doesn't really stop knee-jerk reactions.

Agreed. I've felt that way many times.

...No here though. What OP mentions didn't bother me much; Hutch obviously loves Starsky and that just seemed like the sort of relationship they had. They weren't always sugary sweet to each other, but they were nowhere near afraid of being intimate and supportive as well. It was a nice mix and I didn't get the feeling Hutch did or said anything out of serious malice (maybe that changes in the later seasons, idk). They each had a decent sense of humor and could poke fun at each other and that's a wonderful and enjoyable kind of relationship to have.

There's...some malice a few times in the last season and towards the end of season 3, but I think those times are the exceptions that prove the rule. Meaning IA with you. There's this great level of trust there.

Yea, I've heard enough about the final season to question if Hutch would say something genuinely rude or hurtful then, but in general it isn't something he jumps to doing and isn't his style. Being malicious isn't cool and shouldn't be excused, but no one is perfect and no matter how great your relationship you're probably going to have a few rough spots and make mistakes.

They are buds. There's a lot of back-and-forth there, the way friends do. And a lot of love.

That picture is so fucking cute omfg

I don't know about you, OP, but I'd love to have a friend who was so comfortable with me that he could feel totally comfortable with pushing me around and ragging on me a bit, knowing that I wouldn't hold it against him.

I mean, okay, I guess (from what I remember) Hutch crossed the line a couple times, but still...

I always get kind of sad when this bothers people, because for me, Hutch's weird adorable campaign of pushing and tormenting is like, one of my favorite things about their friendship. He kind of reminds me of a kid punching his fist into his favorite baseball glove repeatedly to reassure himself that it's strong and sturdy and it's not about to fall apart on him. He has some kind of anxiety thing going on.

Anyway, I think an important thing to remember is that the second Starsky gets seriously upset over anything, Hutch drops all his superiorism and stuff immediately and is totally sweet and nice and gentle for as long as he needs to be.

I love your whole comment, but particularly this: He kind of reminds me of a kid punching his fist into his favorite baseball glove repeatedly to reassure himself that it's strong and sturdy and it's not about to fall apart on him.

I think that's a great analogy for Hutch's poking.

Haha thanks! I feel like I've thought way too much about this stuff...

If you haven't seen the whole show....well, damn, you probably haven't seen 'Starsky vs Hutch' yet have you? Ouch.

Or "Partners", for that matter. I always thought that one was the worst, in terms of what the OP is talking about.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
I find "Partners" so fascinating because I like trying to figure out what the fuck was he thinking. Surely he would've realized that Starsky would be completely devastated by that, not just a little scared or guilty? The only explanation I can think of is that he wanted to see Starsky all broken up for some reason. Maybe because he wanted to see how much Starsky loves him; like Ralphie from "A Christmas Story" gleefully fantasizing about how brokenhearted his parents would be if he went blind from soap poisoning.

DA

I haven't seen those eps for years, but I always interpreted Hutch's increasing meanness - and what he did in Starsky vs Hutch - to be expressions of him having this slow, depressive breakdown where he's questioning the meaning of his life and the meaning of his friendship with Starsky. I see what he did in SvsH as essentially self-desructive behaviour. You can also add in him having this years long gay/ 'Oh shit I'm in love with my partner' freakout if you're on that side of the fence...

Either way, it makes for fantastic fanfic that tries to explain then fix their relationship in season 4.

ayrt

Yeah, I saw SvH as pretty self-destructive too. As if he was just so sick of himself/his job/his life he wanted to force Starsky to get lost and let him self-destruct in peace, because he couldn't do that properly if Starsky was still his friend.

I try to headcanon it as sympathetically as possible though - that he was afraid that if he crashed and burned, he'd drag Starsky down with him, so on some subconscious level he felt he had to push Starsky away from him to keep him safe.

(I love that you like to theorize detailed-ly about these things too, anon! :P)
