"Starsky doesn't care, so why should I?"

I think that for viewers, this tends to be easier said than done. If you really connect with a character, just thinking "okay, but this guy's not me, he's not bothered by these things" doesn't really stop knee-jerk reactions.

Agreed. I've felt that way many times.

...No here though. What OP mentions didn't bother me much; Hutch obviously loves Starsky and that just seemed like the sort of relationship they had. They weren't always sugary sweet to each other, but they were nowhere near afraid of being intimate and supportive as well. It was a nice mix and I didn't get the feeling Hutch did or said anything out of serious malice (maybe that changes in the later seasons, idk). They each had a decent sense of humor and could poke fun at each other and that's a wonderful and enjoyable kind of relationship to have.

There's...some malice a few times in the last season and towards the end of season 3, but I think those times are the exceptions that prove the rule. Meaning IA with you. There's this great level of trust there.

Yea, I've heard enough about the final season to question if Hutch would say something genuinely rude or hurtful then, but in general it isn't something he jumps to doing and isn't his style. Being malicious isn't cool and shouldn't be excused, but no one is perfect and no matter how great your relationship you're probably going to have a few rough spots and make mistakes.
