Just finished watching The Celluloid Closet
(Anonymous) 2014-08-28 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)Mine are mostly that a) I'm going to be looking up a lot of the "man these censors are dumb as rocks" movies they grabbed clips from (Red River, Ben-Hur, etc, which I'm too young to have seen), and b) I kind of wish they'd do an updated or "sequel" version, because it seems to me that depictions of gay people in movies have changed since 1995, in that in some respects, they've gone back to the subtext-laden "but it's not gay, they're talking about guns!" deal of the Hays era, but there's more of a popular push for open representation (of lots of groups, but QUILTBAG people are more visible, or more in the public eye, anyway).

Re: Just finished watching The Celluloid Closet
What I find really interesting is that we can't really see those movies as the people back then did - because we have a different cultural context - i.e. something might look terribly gay to us while it wasn't back then, and we in turn might miss subtext those audiences might have picked up on.
A lot of the tropes still remain in fiction today, though, albeit updated, and there still seems to be a reluctance for gay leads if the story is not particularly about sexuality.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 01:18 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, I was watching it because I'm in a class called Before Stonewall right now, about LGBT art and literature and culture before the Stonewall riots in 1969. We stopped about halfways through the movie, so I didn't watch the rest until today.
The cultural context thing is definitely interesting, and definitely something to keep in mind. The snippet from the 1927 movie "Wings" was fascinating, because it's doesn't so much read as queer to me than just... feminine, or rather, what our culture has deemed to be feminine, i.e., expressions of emotion, especially physically.
(Though I will say I don't think that argument holds as much water when you've got the screenwriters and actors saying, "Yeah, that was totally gay, we did that to get around the censors.")
Well, there is a lot of the same bullshit, but... I guess I'm trying to say it's bullshit in different ways? Or at least the scope of the documentary would probably change, if it was remade today, and I'd be interested to see those changes and why they were made.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 05:09 am (UTC)(link)I can't see QUILTBAG without thinking it's something you have to have a certain number of fat quarters to qualify for.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 02:43 am (UTC)(link)I've been watching a lot of old movies on TCM in recent months and I've noticed that I've gotten pretty good at picking out what movies and shorts were pre-code, even if I tune in right in the middle of something with no idea what it's called or what it's about.
