Re: Finding it hard to identify with people/characters of a different sexual orientation?
(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 12:35 am (UTC)(link)But on the other hand, a lot of straight relationships in media are shallow, so I might be being too judgmental.
Re: Finding it hard to identify with people/characters of a different sexual orientation?
(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 12:50 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, I realize it's not a good thing, and once I stop and think for a minute I realize how dumb it is, it's just that initial thought. I don't know how to change that reaction, though.
But maybe you're right that a lot of straight relationships in media ARE pretty superficial.
Re: Finding it hard to identify with people/characters of a different sexual orientation?
(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 12:56 am (UTC)(link)I would suggest looking at the people in your life -- the straight couples -- do you judge their relationships as somehow meaning less or being less "real" than yours is? If you don't then I would say don't worry about your reaction so much.
You're probably just reflexively turned off by shitty writing.
Re: Finding it hard to identify with people/characters of a different sexual orientation?
(Anonymous) 2014-08-29 01:07 am (UTC)(link)Hmmm, you might be right. Most of the relationships of the people around me I think are just as meaningful, but some of them I do think are less real. Like my brother and his girlfriend, for example. But I think that's probably more to do with who he is than the fact that he's straight (he changes girlfriends so often it's hard to believe he's capable of having genuine feelings for anyone).
