Most of the fandom agrees with you, don't worry.

Oh, he was.

No such thing as a Canon Sue, and I am tired of this fucking term being toted out for "character I don't like."

If anyone was a fucking "Sue" in that, it'd be Takato. His own digimon which was UNIQUE came to life, he got a special D-Arc, he was the hero and got to save everyone the end.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-30 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Ehhh, I wouldn't say Takato because he had some major flaws. The Gerry scenes made me cringe.

Ryo is perfect in every way, better than everyone else, and gets crushed on by the girl who before that didn't do romance. He's a sue.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-30 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
He was far from perfect, from what I recall. And Ruki didn't "do" romance because she was distancing herself from the image of her mother.

Ryou also was not better given that Takato was the one always pulling off everything actually fucking important. Cyberdramaon did, like, one noteworthy thing I recall, and that was he took out a single Deva.

OP here

I do think there is such a thing as a "canon sue", and I think Ryo is one.

He is the only one to defeat Rika at the Digimon card game, he had his digimon longer than everyone else, supposedly Cyberdramon is so strong that he can barely be tamed. Everyone likes him, even Rika does later.

And he is able to bio-merge which only the three main characters could do. It wouldn't have been as bad if the other minor characters were able to as well. Admittedly, Marineangemon was mega level already and Lopmon had a mega version, but at least Kazu should have been able to bio-merge with Guardromon.

Ryo got to fight alongside the other main characters even though he just showed up out of nowhere. In the final battle, he was more involved than Kazu, Kenta and Suzie. I won't even start with the fact that Rika pretty much gives up her power to him.

Honestly, the whole "sue" thing is subjective. However, my opinion is that Ryo does fit the standard definition.

You are still wrong.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Theoretically, all of them could Merge. It's just that Juri lost her partner, one of them already HAD a Mega-level, Kazu was Kazu and bumbled a lot of things (plus I recall him being busy protecting other things), and Suzie's partner was MALE in the original plus she was fucking six.

Ryo was the only to beat Ruki? So fucking what? There's always someone out there better than you. He got his digimon sooner? ...And? Again, Takato CREATED his fucking digimon, gets all the cool things, and pretty much single-handedly ACTUALLY defeats the D-Reaper 5ever while the others were virtually useless and flailing around.

what happened with Cyberdramon is interesting. The guy had a virus that being in the Ark back to the real world managed to do away with. That's why Cyberdramon isn't a loose cannon once they cross over. He was out of control because he had a fucking computer virus. which Ryo even states outright, but hey, if you want to throw a hissy fit about how it's because ~OMG HE'S TOO STRONG~.

You want flaws? He ran away from home when initially asked by Cyberdramon to help him digivolve, not even fucking considering how this might affect his parents. Once there, even as Justimon, he was fucking useless. He was unable to actually do anything against the opponents he took on, even with the help of Guardromon, Sakuyamon and MegaGargomon. Antylamon took the thing they were fighting out. Later, he managed to help take out a smaller enemy, then once more was useless until fucking Grani showed up.

The thing with Ruki was a last-ditch effort for both of them because they were desperate. He had a blade, he figured maybe if they could combine their power they could cut the Cable Reaper into ribbons. It was a move of desperation since they needed to take that thing out to actually succeed as it was blocking the thing they needed open. And his plan still failed. It took someone on the other side killing that thing to clear the fucking path.

So don't even talk about how perfect Ryo is when most of his plans fail, he doesn't actually think ahead often, and the supposedly Super Strong Thing That Can't Be Tamed was the result of a goddamn virus.

Ryo was pretty much fanservice. You loved him in the video games, so you'll love him in the show--and if you live in a country that never got those games, sucks for you.

I find his apparent background with Ken interesting (mostly because I love Ken and wonder if Ryo had a friendship or something with Osamu) but he was dull as dirt in tamers.

I'm not a Ryo fan either. I get he was popular in Japan and he had a bushel of materials and games to get to where he is now, but I wished he'd have made maybe a one/two episode appearance/cameo instead like he did in Digimon Zero Two. I think even from a narrative point of view, it felt like he came out of "nowhere" and overstayed his welcome.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't mind him until he pretty much sidelined Ruki in the final battle. It still irritates me that the lead female character got pushed aside so writer's pet Ryo could show off more.

Hey, you get good at that Digimon shit when you're stuck in the digital world. Also something something Ken dark spore something something.
