Are there any shows that improved after the fifth season?

Legit question. I've convinced that it just plan doesn't happen.

DS9's best seasons were the 6th and 7th

I would say 5 and 6. Parts of 7 were excellent, but they were really stunted by having to introduce a new main character.

That's fair. I think I prefer 7 on balance - I think the ending is pretty strong and I like Ezri a lot. But I can see why you'd prefer 5

I don't know about "improved", but Star Trek: TNG maintained its quality pretty through their 7th and final series, I thought? (To be fair, it took them a couple seasons to hit their stride.)

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

But then, it was only approximately the same level of goodness as season 4, and the quality went down again in season 7, so *shrugs*

I think all eight seasons of Magnum PI are equally good. I don't really want to use the word "improved", but a lot of the most memorable episodes -- Laura, Death And Taxes, Forty, Limbo, Paper War, etc. -- were indeed late in the series.

I'd have to agree with you based on some of the shows I like. Friends, The Office, and One Tree Hill are three that come to mind where the sixth was tolerable and I lost interest after that.

Friends maybe?

I would have said Breaking Bad but apparently that was just Season 5 part 1 and [almost a year later which really makes it too long for just a hiatus] part 2 aired.

Had they actually called Part 2, Season 6, I would say it improved. Those last episodes of Breaking Bad (especially Ozymandius) were AMAZING.

I honestly can't think of any. Oz was okay after the fifth season (some great, dramatic stuff happened) but better than the first five seasons? Erm, not sure about that.
