Ha ha, of course I'm familiar with Fairport. I have like 4 or 5 different versions of "Matty Groves" in my library. Have you heard the special "multi-version" from the Free Reed box set? It's put together from like 10 or 12 different tapes from every era of Fairport, 1969 to 2002. Super cool stuff.

Really like the Nell Ni Chroinin and Anne Briggs songs. The goat song is beautiful and sprightly. I had heard Bert Jansch's version of "Black Water Side" but not Annie's. Love those folk sopranos.

I did think Matty Groves was an obvious one, but just wanted to make sure. ;) That compilation sounds amazing! Will have to check it out. Have you ever been to Cropredy music festival? They can still really kick it. :)

I love Nell Ni Chroinin, she has an amazing voice.

Annie Briggs' Black Water Side is the original I believe? Certainly when people talk about the controversy with Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page apparently nicked bits for 'Black mountain side'), she's always talked about as the wronged party.

So... do you have any recs along these lines? *trying my luck*
