It was my second conventiony thing in my life, a talk by JNT, Elizabeth Sladen, and Pertwee about four hours south of where I lived. My friends decided to take me along, as I'd just gotten into Who (they were all long-time fans - well, long-time of at least a couple of years, as this is when the series first started coming over to the States). Each of the trio gave a talk (I guess they were up from farther South, as there were lots of conventions in the Miami area) to the audience, there was a tiny costume contest, and then they signed autographs. As I was terribly shy, I volunteered to take photos rather than stand in line, but, as my name is only about two letters different than Sarah Jane Smith, Liz had to meet me, so my friends pulled me into the line so we could exchange pleasantries. One of my friends had a huge crush on Pertwee, and loved his hair, and asked if she could touch it.

He said, "You can even pull it!"

"Oh, no, I just want to touch!"

"Well, go ahead!"

So she did, and let out this trill about how springy and soft it was. And then they nudged me in front of him and he looked at my name as Ms. Sladen had signed it (the full name, of course), and said, "Oh, no, this name is too long, I'll charge extra for this one," making everyone around us laugh and Ms. Sladen slap his arm and insist he sign my full name.

As I recall, his time on stage was absolutely hysterical; he talked about his then-wife and how they met, how he loved telling stories, how he chose his clothing to play the Doctor during his casting call (his grandfather's clothing), and other delightful things. He was a cheeky, fun man, with a beautiful voice and the heart of a storyteller.

It was. Thank you for letting me remember it!
