Re: Might I interest you in Upton Sinclair's The Jungle?

I never really understood why Batman gets called a Mary Sue. Like, maybe in some mediums, but the comics avert it a lot of the time. He's probably one of the most psychologically fucked up people in DC, he's been criticized in universe for all the shit he puts his numerous Robins through, Gotham still sucks ass no matter what he does, and in some issues a lot of Gotham citizens outright blame him for all the villains in the first place. I think Superman is probably a better example but even he has arcs that averts it.

Sometimes he's a Mary Sue, sometimes he's better written than that. He nonetheless has some pretty solid Mary Sue qualities, and so does Superman.

eh, the term "mary sue" has pretty much lost all meaning. I think many superheroes would qualify as mary sues to some people if we're using the term very loosely. being super strong, admirable and undefeatable is kind of their thing (well, it used to be anyway. and it still is a lot of the time, but it's more common nowadays for comic writers to portray the characters as more flawed and fallible than in decades past.)
