(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 03:09 am (UTC)(link)Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy - with a tw for graphic violence! The novel's set around the mid-1800s, and follows a protaganist we know only as "the kid" as he runs away from home and eventually falls in with a group of scalphunters. The novel is unflinching in its portrayal of what these people do, and the senseless deaths that surround them.
I wasn't able to read this in one go because of the violence - I had to keep putting it down for a breather. It's quite unlike anything else I've read in that there's no glorification or embellishment (whether positive or negative) of the violence. It simply just is, and in that way, is one of the most visceral descriptions of the pointlessness of war that I've ever read.
