'cause three weeks is definitely fast, amirite?

[identity profile] infringe.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. I feel faint whenever I think about how fast they get the job done.

Dude, they already have five! BUT WHOOPS-- I guess it's not enough.

[identity profile] infringe.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
What difference does that make when you still take so much time doing stuff?

[identity profile] dreadnot.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
As I said in my earlier comment, although not on this thread, it is more productive to actually speak to the mods rather than complain in another comm.

It's always your prerogative, of course, but the question arises then as to whether you want results, or to be injured?

Multitasking makes bad content. Woes.

jacking thread

(Anonymous) 2007-12-10 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
one of the reasons why people probably don't speak to the mods is because it's been tried before and it's been ignored countless times. it's hard to blame people for complaining outside of the comm if their questsions and complaints are ignored.

and i don't see the pertinence in the last bit of your comment. why exactly are you asking if she wants to be injured?

Re: jacking thread

[identity profile] dreadnot.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Because complaining without taking action is nothing but drawing attention to being wronged without making any effort to fix it.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-10 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
one of the reasons why people probably don't speak to the mods is because it's been tried before

so this isn't considered taking action? or even making an effort?

[identity profile] dreadnot.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
In an unrelated comm? Yes. It's considered not taking action.

Fortunately, we care, and thus we're here.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-10 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
...did you think i was speaking about an unrelated comm since the beginning? because i wasn't. i was speaking about the polychromatic problem post and polychromatic comms in general.

[identity profile] dreadnot.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. I was. Feel free to IM me this evening at your leisure to tell me all about it.

Prior to taking on the mod responsibilities, I made a point of not poking into people's private gripes because that's the sort of behavior that, by definition, spreads them.

Now that I'm a mod, I want to hear them. Otherwise, happy shiny etc bullshit.

However, I have to be irresponsible now and log off for a period of probably 2 - 2 1/2 hours doing that annoying RL commute, Christmas, shopping, and non-computer thing.

When I get back, my contact information is fully public in the poly mod shopping post as well as elsewhere in this wonderful post.

(Anonymous) 2007-12-11 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
i'm not a member of polychromatic. i read and saw one of the main gripes is people not getting a reply from the mods and people getting ignored by the mods when they try to bring up a problem in polychromatic's problem post. it's why i assumed it was why people took to complaining through outside sources.

it's the natural way of things. if you can't be heard at the main source then you take it to another source. blaming them for doing this is like saying it's not the mods fault for never replying.

they fulfilled their responsbility of going to the mods with their problems. the mods didn't return the sentiment. it happens. life goes on. if measures are being taken to fix it then amen and all that. /end 2 cents.

Two, actually - in the odd circumstance that applications require further input.

Four pages of applications.

But nonetheless, thank you for your mathematical appreciation. ^__^ v

[identity profile] infringe.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Two weeks isn't really something to be proud of.

Four pages? So what? I've seen other roleplaying communities who process six to eight pages way faster than you guys.

[identity profile] ruxi.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it isn't. We're sorry we're both, in our majority, students, and thorough.

I don't know how familiar you are with our application system, but what we are generally forced to do is ask for either additional RP samples, or additional resources. We leave people the time to produce those. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

But... I think the only thing my continuing on this line of thought would accomplish would be to, er, generate d0rama. The (I assume) player in question had frustrations to voice, and much as I personally wish they'd taken it with us (granted, maybe they'd be discouraged to do so, since we're apparently elitist jerks)? It's their God given right.

I do recall you from a good few months ago, and I think you'd have some valuable input to offer as to the game in its overall. If you ever have the time and/or inclination, please don't hesitate to do so.

Thank you.

[identity profile] databomb.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Uhhhh can't help but ask, if you're so often forced to ask for additional RP samples, why not make the initial application more comprehensive? I've been in a lot of comms and uhhh no offense, but your app seems a bit lax in the first place - link to a wiki for information? Just a RP sample and journal sample? - and that might cut down time? It would probably lessen the necessity of back-and-forth correspondence?

[identity profile] ruxi.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The regular application at most RPs also asks for character history, as per user analysis. The problem, I think, is that some people can know the canon, but just... be unable to integrate it in their writing, you know?

If we ask for an additional sample, it tends to be because we're unsure as to where they want to take the character. On some occasions, that's more apparent than in others.

[identity profile] databomb.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Most RPs ask for characters history and personality at least - options usually include appearance, strengths and weaknesses, powers and weapons, etc, I think? And uhhhhhhhh just my opinion, but if a person supposedly is able to write something from the point of view of the character, shouldn't just wording the history be easy? Also, it makes it awfully difficult for players of minor characters to find suitable links - in those cases, it would probably be much easier to write up a personality/history/whatever, yes?

Also, "where they want to take the character," uhhhh some people join to see what will happen? And it's hard to express all of "where you want to take your character" in a quick sample, I think. No offense, but I don't understand how this is any more effective than the standard system of asking for more information in the first place - not to mention, just my opinion, but it might be easer for an OOC player to trick their way through the short app and get in?

[identity profile] jamiefawkes.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Don't mean to poke my nose in here, but I promise I'm quite sweet and lovable. >:

Though I've never come across an RP that asks for those things, they'd make sense. However, I, personally, don't think they'd apply well to Poly's plot/system. Most people arrive with only what's on their person at the time of their plot-gankage, and being thrust into such a new place, they may not act as they usually do for a while until they've adjusted. I play Rabi from D.Gray-Man, and when he appeared, he had fallen down a hole and his weapon was broken. :D; So it's currently rendered useless.

I usually have problems getting across my character's personality/motivations the first time I apply, because I focus on integrating them into the plot and their surroundings, and have been asked for additional RP samples both previous times, but this was quickly resolved this time around, when I started asking friends that are excellent writers to have a look over my applications and give me an honest opinion about how I convey the character and balance it with their integration-- I'm doing it this application session, and I've already tweaked a few things for the better. :3 ♥ That was a mouthful, oh my;;

Regarding the resource links, I'm pretty sure I recall a recent-ish post about that, stating that if you really are pressed in finding suitable links, you can ask someone you know familiar with the fandom/character to write up their own evaluation of the character's general personality to be used. ♥

I don't think the "where you want to take your character" is a very long-term commitment-- I don't actually have any plans for both of my boys past the first couple weeks! A horrible thing to admit, really. But I don't think it's particularly important, considering the plot structure of the RP itself. Things change every few days and it's a real rollercoaster. :3 ♥ But we love it that way~ I believe it's more about showing an understanding of your character's motivations. What will drive their choices when this and this happen? That sort of thing~

[identity profile] databomb.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
1. Concerning plot, personality, etc., I'm not saying that has to be used strictly for the RP itself, but it does help people get a grasp of how well the player knows the character, yes? A player who can put the character's situation and personality and whatnot in their own words can probably play them out a lot more realistically, I think.

2. Yes, it's true that you can ask another person to write something for you, but if it's an obscure fandom, it may be hard to find someone to do that. Also, why have to go through this hassle in the first place? Since the mods are slow with correspondence, this eats up a lot time - let's say, they take two weeks and ask you for a write-up, and then they take another week to look it over and approve you. That's three weeks. It's a lot of time, and I'm sorry, but I know a lot of people won't last so long before their interest dies out.

3. And uhhh the thing is, someetimes a character doesn't have that much depth in the first place that can be shown through a third-person sample? Like alkwejnflkafe not all characters are DEEP and THOUGHTFUL and stuff, or have a much more subtle personality that would be more well-expressed through a third-person sample and stuff? I personally just don't see how just a quick RP sample can express all those things the mods are demanding: personality, depth, future plans, etc. etc.

Not to mention, it must be harder for mods to gain all this information from just one sample? If they're saying it's hard work approving applications, then why not make the process easier for themselves by making it easier to judge at once? (HAHAHAHA, it's kind of pathetic how many of my sentences end with question marks alwkenfaf)

Uh yes. I think that's it?

:')

[identity profile] ruxi.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
All too true.

This puts certain things in perspective. Thank you.

[identity profile] gaulish.livejournal.com 2007-12-10 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, please. Maybe that would be the case if they asked for re-writes. I've never seen applications take THAT long and I've been the game since March.
