I'm sorry, OP, that sounds unpleasant.

Fandom goes through cycles, anon. Seems like not that long ago you couldn't shake a stick without hitting the omegaverse nonsense, now it's the soulmate identifying marks stuff. Some of it is really good, but a lot of it is silly. Next year it will be something else oddball.

I wouldn't doubt it. You have a point, though; I haven't been seeing a lot of omegaverse lately, but I have seen soulmates AU's.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god, the omega verse.

I can't be the only one who found it intensely creepy...

It was, but that was kind of the point.

There were a lot of different reasons omegaverse appealed, I think, but at least one of the reasons was that the idea of secondary genders made it easy to ship slash pairings without having to deal with homophobia in society. It was really good setup for escapist fantasies.

At least in my corner of fandom both seem to still be a thing at the moment, with Omegaverse slightly ahead I think, and other than that most of the AU's are the standard coffee-shop fare.

But yes these things do tend to hit in cycles, at least a little bit.

omg, coffee shop! I feel that the only big trope not mentioned is wing!fic.

Oh, are soulmate AUs picking up? I've read a few here in there in different fandoms, but for the most part, I thought omegaverse was still going strong.

Interesting ... a tiny fandom predominated by a rarepair? How does that work?

(Is it that the majority of the fics ship two minor characters?)

maybe it's a tiny corner of a big fandom.

Oh god, this is a thing? I've seen it in a few places, but I hadn't realised it's widespread. I wish people will start tagging it with something specific that's easy to avoid.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I've seen a variant on it popping up on my dashboard a few times -- one where you literally only see in black and white until you meet your soulmate, and then you get the ability to see in color. Which... I mean, I don't want to be mean to the people who keep on squeeing over it, tastes differ and all... but it just seems terribly twee to me.

(I also don't really hold with the idea of 'soulmates' much of the time -- it just reduces people down too much for me. People are complicated, and there's a lot of people out there who'll click better or worse with you in different ways because they line up with different parts of you. Saying 'there's one person out there who's exactly perfect for you and everyone else is nothing compared to them' really doesn't appeal to me.)

Have you considered suggesting other ideas?

I'm not talking necessarily about you writing fic (after all, writing the kind of fics we want to read can be frustrating if we're the only ones doing it), but spreading headcanons, promoting discussion, sharing new scenarios or ideas. In my experience, that helps. Someone could get excited and create something different out of it!

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel you, OP. That does sound incessantly boring. D:

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Where did this even get started, anyway? The identifying marks thing?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I always thought it was that one movie where they had a countdown timer on their wrist. Idk the name and I never saw it though.

I believe in the Avengers fandom, someone wrote a fic where people had the first sentence their soul mate says to them written somewhere on their body. A lot of people liked it and decided to write their own spin on it. Like the whole Severitus trope from Harry Potter.

Man, I get this too. I wish there was more variety and just more stuff in general.

Let me guess.... Avengers fandom- Darcy/Bucky.

Huh.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-01 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
OP, I don't know what else you expected with a pairing like that.

I wrote exactly one of those, and I have so many people who clamor for more of them. No. One was more than enough and it mostly came out frustration about the trope.
