Why do so many people hate Ron.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 08:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Because they're morons who don't like realistic teenagers and can't be assed to dig any deeper than the surface.

Some of them are also classist. Not all of course, but some.

Or they only saw the movies.

(Of course, I'm not saying everyone who dislikes Ron is a moron. Sometimes, a character just rubs you the wrong way and that's fine. But a big section of his major hatedom/contingent of people who dismiss him is made up of people with all-around vile ideas and views on multiple different things.)

NA

Wow, that's reading a lot into things. I don't mind Ron but I also didn't get a lot from his character. He's pretty bland to me (book!Ron less so than movie!Ron who actually did annoy me). It's not tied into class issues at all either - I grew up dirt poor myself and tend to like characters who have money issues more than ones who are set for life.

But the role he played in the story just didn't do much for me. I also am usually more intrigued by antagonistic relationships, or friends who start out as enemies and only later grudgingly develop respect and actually start to like each other. That's why I like the occasional fanfic where Harry and Draco become friends. It's not because Draco's a better character than Ron - he's definitely not a better person - but his role in the story and his relationship with Harry interest me much more. Ron was just the Hero's Childhood Best Friend. If he'd been able to play more of a role in the plot, I think I might have liked him more. As it was, it felt like he was mainly there for comic relief.

That's fine. Which is why I said, and I quote my above comment exactly: "I'm not saying everyone who dislikes Ron is a moron. Sometimes, a character just rubs you the wrong way and that's fine."

It's the people who HATE him and think he's OMG so awful for daring to have teenagery flaws that I'm talking about.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Have any of you with your ~realistic teenager!~ excuse ever thought about, like, that a lot of people were teenagers themselves when they read the books.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
ayrt

Absolutely. Teenagers judge other teenagers/teenager characters far more harshly and unfairly than adults judge teenagers and teenage characters.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
And that's why they're morons. Alrighty then.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-01 09:57 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, yes, and yes. You've pinned it.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
In my several years in HP fandom, I think there's two reasons:

1. they're immature, narrow-minded, nasty pricks who think teenagers should be able to magically act like adults.

2. they only saw the movies, in which he was painted in as poor and shallow a light as the screenwriter could get away with, and all his good scenes or lines or ideas were taken away.

People who actually hate him, mind you. Disliking is a different thing.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
One thing I do appreciate about the existence of the Ron haters though is how clear they make it that character hatred is very rarely related to social justice issues. People are always banging on about how if you hate a certain POC character or a female character it's *because* they're not white or because they're a woman. I'm sure that's true in some cases. But not the majority, I'd wager. Given that the complaints are about marginalization, character bashing, the way characters are written in fic, etc. -- which are all things that happen to Ron IN SPADES.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
They might hate him for the continual whining he does, a lot of which relates to him and his family being poor. So classism maybe?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I find that REALLY hard to believe though because people seemed to ADORE Fred and George.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean the ones who got rich off their shop and never seemed to complain about money even before that?

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Even before that, though, they were pretty much universally beloved. Not to mention Bill and Charlie, who seemed well liked. Ginny was pretty hated too even though she never brought up money.

If anything, I think the Ron hate had a lot more to do with shipping seeing as how Ginny also took a huge hit.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
True. Did they ever really talk about their family's status or anything? I know Percy did, but he also essentially betrayed his family for Fudge's regime.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-01 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Fred and George never make the kind of noise about being poor that Ron does, though, do they?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-01 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
Continual whining? Ron rarely complains about his situation, from pride if nothing else.

I don't know, morieris. I just don't know. There's some things in this world I just can't understand.

(I guess his character just doesn't appeal to some people - he's sort of the supportive ally, and when he's not the supportive ally he's off being angsty, and he's a goofball and a bit of a lunkhead sometimes and he bickers with Hermione who is beloved so you can kind of see how people could miss his real qualities)

[personal profile] solticisekf 2014-08-31 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
In many fics it's because in 3d year he wasn't a great friend for some time. Some other fics also bash Hermione. Or just write the two as really anoying. Friendships are hard to write, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
For me, it's entirely personal.

Ron's character reminds me very much of someone I used to know who, when the going got tough in my life, they got going.

So poor Ron gets the brunt of my resentment towards that person.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
i think it's mostly for shipping reasons. i don't think it's a coincidence that most of the ron hate comes from harry/hermione, harry/draco and hermione/snape shippers, he gets in the way either romantically or by objecting to the shippers' woobie-poo.

another reason is that some people in fandom just plain don't relate to him. a lot of these fandom types who fancy themselves intellectuals project whatever stupid jerk who annoyed them in real life unto ron.
