Watch Disney's Gargoyles. They had Vikings and someone on the design team was insistent that they not have horns on their helmets.

I was going to type this up and glad I clicked on your comic. Hakon may have looked like his had horns, but they were metal adornments made of the same material as his helmet to signal he was their leader.
