Did you also know that dragons don't actually exist?

You have very strong feelings about helmets, don't you?

I like how you're upset about a piece of clothing in a fictional universe, but dragons are totally fine.

That's where you draw the line in a fantasy movie for kids that involves training dragons?

Damn those horns! If not for those, these movies would be completely realistic and based on historical fact.

Is this a really extreme version of "audiences will accept the impossible but not the improbable?"

Or, I guess this would more "audiences will accept the impossible but not popular culture-fueled historical inaccuracies?"

Did they speak with Scottish accents, and their kids with American accents then? Oh and ride dragons? I hadn't realised.

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? THAT'S what's putting you off about an animated kids' movie about people being friends with dragons? Ooookay...

They also spoke english. ENGLISH.

HDT

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
My first thought was 'dragons'. My second thought was perhaps the OP is *expected* to watch/like the movie because they're a historian or otherwise knows a lot about Vikings....enough to get mad at blatant historical inaccuracies. And the horns thing would be immediately obvious to those who know it's wrong.

Though mainly I'm suggesting this because I remember the lecturer for my Old English Literature course having a similar problem with her friends assuming she really liked dragons because she taught a course on Tolkien....

[personal profile] replicantangel 2014-08-31 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
LoL!

Blame the Scandinavians themselves! That misconception entered into culture when Scandinavians began illustrating histories of their own people and put horns on their helmets. Then, Wagner's "The Ring Cycle" (which uses Scandinavian myth for its plot) used it in its costume design. (The costume designer was German, I grant you.)

Historical anachronisms are common as all get out in movies with any historical setting. Do you froth at the mouth watching "Braveheart" and "300"?

People are defensive about this lol. I like the movies but the horns annoyed me too. It's such a silly misconception, iconic of Vikings or not, there was really no practical reason to have horns. Why not cut 'em and help recreate the image of Vikings to something.. a tad less inaccurate?

Ok, so normally I am with you and get riled by stupid historical inaccuracies.

But I don't see how a film called How to Train Your DRAGON is pretending to be historically accurate in any way?

I half suspect you may be a troll tbh in which case, you got me.

I'm sure if the idea had occurred to them, the Vikings would have worn horns on their helmets.

The helmets would look totally stupid without the horns though

You could watch History's Vikings, OP. No horned helmets in sight. They still take historical liberties of course, but as for costuming, they stick more to accuracy.

As for HTTYD, eh. They feel like vikings in an alternate world to me, so the helmets don't bother me in the least.

this is apparently a serious issue

(Anonymous) 2014-08-31 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL I draw a comic with Vikings in it and part of a long-running joke is that one failure of a Viking has a horned helmet, and if a day goes by when someone doesn't send me an angry message about the historical inaccuracy of the helmet (in a comic that features Vikings using cellphones, wearing shower caps, and going to the movies), I wouldn't know what to do.
