Stuff you use to love, but looking back on now don't like so much

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2014-09-01 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically a reverse of yesterday's thread (and I expect people have a lot more of these).

The one thing that I am a bit sad about not liking so much is The Neverending Story. I LOVED it as a kid. It made me cry! But when I try to rewatch it as an adult (every now and again), I realize how boring it is. Honestly, the movie feels like it goes on for days. I guess that is why it is called The Neverending Story.

Another thing (that I mentioned once) is bike riding. I used to do it all the time as a kid. But at some point in my life, I became a huge weenie and now bike riding just makes me nervous.

What things did you used to love but not so much anymore?

A lot. It's not that I hate them it's just, a lot of stuff I've outgrown. That's a horrible word in a sense, but it's true. Campy old shows like Magnum PI or the A-Team, or just the B-grade action and horror flicks I used to consume. It just doesn't really do it for me anymore. I don't hate it, but won't go out of my way to see it.

My sister sill loves B-grade horror films. :P But it does seem that as you get older your tastes refine and sometimes not even nostalgia can save old movies.

Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings films

I read the first four Harry Potter books at least fifty times. The fifth at least twenty. The sixth probably half a dozen. And the seventh twice. My interest in it has just tapered off as I've gotten older. I used to be able to hold hours-long conversations about it friends growing up. But the seventh book disappointed me a lot.

The Lord of the Rings films I was absolutely in love with as they were coming out -- loved the actors (watched tons of their films), loved the music (bought the soundtracks), loved to just watch them on VHS then DVD. And they're great fun as spectacle. But the characters are just so boring and one-note to me that I can't get very invested into it. My love for it was largely superficial.

I still love Lord of the Rings. And I remember being a bit obsessed about the actors. But it are not movies I love so much that I will rewatch them all the time (or even watch when on TV).

Sorry the seventh disappointed you. :C

When I was a little kid I LOOOOVED this animated Nutcracker feature film. It starred Keifer Sutherland, oddly enough.

...yeah rewatching it as an adult made me realize it's really pretty bad...

I WAS RIGHT ABOUT ITS DROSSELMEYER BEING AWESOME THOUGH.

There are soooo many movies and shows I look back on and realized were horrible. The most embarrassing is that Jack movie with Robin Williams.

Apparently there is a famous race horse named Drosselmeyer. That is what came up when I searched it. :P

RENT. At twenty, this was my reaction: "YEAH! BOHEMIA IS ALIVE! DOWN WITH THE PRIVILEGED AND GREEDY! WOOOHOO!"

Now? I still love the music, and I think the premise is strong, but I can actually see where Benny was coming from (he was an asshole about it, but he kind of had a point, and he tried to actually help Mimi), Angel killed a dog for cash, and most of the characters just generally annoy me. I don't think it's as amazing as I thought it was before.

At least you still love the music! I assume it is just the movie RENT? Or have you seen the actual play and disliked it as well?

I liked the play, and maybe I would again - it was the movie I saw again and wasn't as sold on, but mostly I've just looked back and realized there's a lot of things I dislike.

I'm kind of the opposite, but then, I went about ten years without even listening to the soundtrack (no real reason, I just kind of stopped listening to musicals when it felt like my ambitions for Broadway were coming to a stop).

I finally threw it on the iPod and let it play in the car... and got so many freaking feels. It could just be I missed hearing it, but I might even love it more now.

The Dungeons & Dragons cartoon

I loved it as a kid, but I got it on DVD a few years ago and damn if it isn't grating.

Oh no! Did you actually buy it or was it given to you?

Oh, I bought it. I couldn't even get through one full episode.

I watched that! But I can see why it wouldn't age well.

I was just thinking about this show yesterdayand wondering about how it would hold up for me today.

ayrt

Unless you're really curious, I think you should probably just let it keep fondly in your memories rather than watching.

I loved The Baby-Sitter's Club as a kid, but those books gave me screwed up perceptions of reality. O_o

A lot of the manga I read as a young teenager. At the time, they were great stories, but after rereading them I gave most of them away.

I also used to love swimming in the ocean whenever we went to the beach. I still love going to the beach, but I can't stand the cold water anymore.

:C Do you like swimming when the water is warm?

Labyrinth. Still have nostalgia for it and appreciate the aesthetic and how much they did with the technology they had, but I no longer have the patience for "teenager learns to get over herself" stories. (And I tend to distrust adults who still like it, because in my experience most of them identify way too much with Sarah and think she's totally right about her life being so unfair.)

I actually still like the Labyrinth. But when I watch it, I tend to skip to my favorite parts and skip most of the whining.

Oh man like all of the Goosebumps books, I read sooooo many of them as a kid and really loved them but now... It's really not the same and they are not all that well-written either.

I still have a bit of nostalgic fondness for them but I certainly don't love them like I did.

I feel that way about the Animorphs books! I owned like alllll of them. I wish I could enjoy them more but they are just so short. Though, they do have some pretty mature themes.
