I'm in the opposite shoes. (though it's only for a minibang) I was on a couple of people's list, but not high enough to get selected, to the point that I thought I wasn't going to get claimed, but then this awesome artist got me. I've been all nerves since then that they won't like my fic/are disappointed that they got me. SO.

Anyway, yes, to your problem, it's hard not to use the bangs as a way to get art. But I think you almost have to go in expecting the worst? Which is hard to do. Maybe it'd help to think of it this way: if people were just giving you art for the fic, it might not be all that good, either, but it'd still be cool to get it? I don't know.
