I am well aware that this makes me sound like a whiny, ungrateful bitch.

But I disappointed in the artist I got for my big bang. Claims just opened, and I was happy at first that my fic got claimed so fast, but when I looked on the artist's LJ...well, I know everyone had to start somewhere, and everyone needs practice, and this particular artist looks like they just started in drawing and artwork. I get that it's probably a big leap for them to commit themselves to a big bang..

But I'm still disappointed in not getting a good artist for my story. :( I'm especially worried that this will end up like the last time I did a big bang. I got an artist who wasn't very good and did a fanmix to make-up for some last-minute art that even less good...despite the fact that during the artist claims, writers were allowed to say which kinds of art we did or didn't prefer, and the only one I said I didn't like was fanmixes. And at first, the artist was going along, but asked if they could do a fanmix at the end and, like, there was no way to say "I don't like fanmixes at all" without sounding like a dick.

Even if this doesn't end up like that, though, I'm still kinda disappointed in my artist. I'll still work with them, encourage them, and hope for the best, but...I think this is the point I need to stop using "hey, you'll get cool art out of this!" as motivation to write (or rather, to write faster/fast enough to fit the big bang timeframe) and focus more on just the writing process itself (which I normally like to spend a lot more time on - big bangs are a major challenge for me because of that).

I....sort of get it, but please don't make them feel bad if their art disappoints. People get into these things for different reasons and some just want to have fun (or maybe it is just a big step for them).

That's the only problem with exchanges. I've never had that particular problem, but I've been asked to write things for people who want the opposite of what I'd be willing to write. It was really annoying when one fest was right after the release of the latest HP book, and I made it clear I wanted to write something exploring themes relating to the book. The person I got? "And in my head, nothing is canon past the fourth book." Great. (And why even sign up for a ficfest if you hate half the source material anyway?)

I'm in the opposite shoes. (though it's only for a minibang) I was on a couple of people's list, but not high enough to get selected, to the point that I thought I wasn't going to get claimed, but then this awesome artist got me. I've been all nerves since then that they won't like my fic/are disappointed that they got me. SO.

Anyway, yes, to your problem, it's hard not to use the bangs as a way to get art. But I think you almost have to go in expecting the worst? Which is hard to do. Maybe it'd help to think of it this way: if people were just giving you art for the fic, it might not be all that good, either, but it'd still be cool to get it? I don't know.

I hope that it all works out for you.

This is why I don't do exchanges or bangs or stuff like that anymore, honestly. Not gonna lie, it's disappointing as hell to see other people getting really awesome art or fic and then you get something that just plain isn't good.

+1. I'll still throw myself heart and soul into comment fic fests where there are open prompts and no obligations/expectations of a 1-1 exchange, because I love writing for people. But I can't remember the last time I liked what I got in return, and I'm tired of being chained to one person's ideas and bending myself into a pretzel to give them just what they want even if it's something I don't like when I feel like other participants aren't doing the same.

+1

My stories for big bangs are always popular and well-liked after the reveals, but none of the good artists claim them in the beginning (even though I've had more than one artist telling me they wished they had claimed them.) It gets you down after a while even if it's inevitable; there are maybe two or three good artists in any big bang, and they can't claim everyone.

Now I just write longer stories and get art as a gift or commission it, and that's worked out much better for everyone probably.

Unless you're really good, the artist probably feels the same way about you.

I've seen many BNF/nobody exchange pairings in my time and can imagine that the BNF is inevitably disappointed each time. However, how the BNF reacts is very revealing about the BNF themselves. I've seen lovely people be kind and supportive and I've seen entitled dickholes snub their artists publically. Just bear that in mind.

You never know. I've had artists pick me for big bangs and I'd been very wary of their art, then they turned out something absolutely beautiful for me, far beyond what I'd expect from the work seen on the internet.

So be encouraging, and hope for the best.

At least you get artists picking your work at all. I'm so used to mine not getting picked at all, even by shit artists, that I just do my own art now. Saves me the trouble. I love big bangs, but srsly. :/

I think you're fine. You're aware that this is an uncharitable and kinda petty way to feel, which we're all prone to sometimes. You're not telling the artist this to their face (I hope), so you're not causing them pain unnecessarily. You're just having one of those profoundly human moments where you can't help being a little small-minded about something; anyone who claims to be immune to those is a goddamned liar.
