I know very little about her and avoid her music as much as possible. That said, just looking at that picture....I'm not feeling the empowerment. I'm feeling the 'producers needed to sell this record and her music alone won't get that done so here's a picture of her ass.'

Some of her music is definitely sex-positive in an active way. It's is definitely a nice contrast to most female pop stars, which have a lot of sex, but mostly in a passive way: they are all about the women being available for sex, wanting love all night, telling men to come get them, etc. Nicki Minaj's music is definitely more about being very selective about men/choosing the man, and then being an active partner or pursuing sex. From the angle and that kind of sex positivity, I can definitely see why some people might see her as a feminist musician.

But doing so does ignore the rest of her musical character/pop industry persona, which is still very much deeply entrenched in sexual exploitation.

I'm not saying she can't be a feminist or anything - she may very well be trying to pursue feminism as much as she can within the confines of the highly exploitative music industry - even rich, popular artists in the industry can be powerless in the face of production companies' and their legal and corporate power.

But as her public persona stands now, I do think feminist icon is kind of stretching it.

I dunno. Just because she's singing about having an active role during sex doesn't mean women aren't still being reduced to sexual objects.

That's what I mean about seeing where some people might be coming from: most female pop musicians' songs place them as an object of or recipient for sex. Nicki Minaj does get a distinction that in most of her songs (or at least the ones I've heard), she is a sexual agent, and often pits men as sexual objects. So I can see where some Tumblr feminists might be coming from. I don't agree with it (again, ignores rest of her career), but I can see their perspective and why they might be latching onto her. *shrugs* It makes sense once I think about it, I just didn't know that they actually had done so, so it caught me off guard.
