How does one even participate?

http://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide/profile#participation is the best summary I can provide. I'd suggest you only try to read the rules if you're seriously interested in signing up, as they are a complex and confusing web.

DA

I got through "related fandoms" on the eligibility section of the rules on the LJ page and was just like "fuck all this noise." That is just too much, and I'm not sure why anyone would want to go through all that.

Aw, that makes me sad to hear. But I completely understand your reaction! I have no doubt it's all quite overwhelming if you're completely new. But honestly, to sum it up: Would you like to request rare fandoms? If your answer is yes, then you probably don't even need to read all those rules! They're more for people with fandoms that technically aren't all that rare, and who'll perhaps even need to argue to have them included. But if you're anything like me -- asking for fandoms that have zero fics -- you really don't need to bother with all that stuff.

The nomination part is awful and complicated and I don't even bother with it. I just wait until the fandom list is complete and then look through the list for stuff I want to read and write. The actual fest is just write 1000 words and turn it on time. No biggie.

Well, for one you gotta sign up! ...Except not necessarily, you could still participate without officially signing up (writing treats, pinch hitting, etc.), so, uh -- like the person above said, it'd probably be best for you if you read through the official texts!

I'd be happy to try and answer more specific questions you might have afterwards, though :)

Are sign-ups open yet?

Re: Yuletide

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2014-09-02 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
No, it's a while until then. Fandom nominations will start on the 22nd, then there's some stuff that happens inbetween, before acual sign-ups begin on the 19th of October.

Ah, that's a while yet, yes.

Nominations are just a portion

[personal profile] silverr 2014-09-02 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, the nomination rules are pretty complex, but seriously, you don't need to worry about them if your fandom is really really tiny. Yuletide is all about small to tiny fandoms.

If your fandoms are medium-sized, then the only rule you need to pay attention to if you want to nominate (which is how you ensure that something you either want to write or request will be an option when it comes time for signups) is - Are there more than 1000 completed fics in English and over 1000 words for this fandom? checking that takes literally only a minute or two.

(Having said that, as I've done Yuletide on and off for almost 10 years, I'd be happy to check the counts for anyone. Feel free to PM me or post here.)

So, it's basically for smaller fandoms specifically?

You...didn't realise that until now? But people were explaining it to you and posting links.

I actually totally missed that when reading through the rules. But that does make me wonder - isn't that hard then if you have to sign up for several fandoms? Like it seems unlikely you'd be that knowledgeable of several small ones.

You OFFER to write four (not sure of actual numbers for this year) and you REQUEST four, but you'll only be matched to someone who requested one of the things you offered ( and generally you'll only receive a fic for one of the fandoms you requested.)

When you get your assignment you will see all the requests that the person you were assigned asked for -- and you are allowed to write for any of their requests -- but very often you might have no knowledge of 75% of what they asked for.

Yes, it's always been for rare/small fandoms -- which is why the rules for noms can get so complicated! With a few thousand people signing up each year, trying to ensure that everyone gets matched is kind of an amazing feat.

(The "in English" proviso is there to cover fandoms like Saint Seiya, which has an extremely active/popular non-English fandom: only about 8% of the fics for it on ff.net are in English.)

The complicated rules come in when people want to unclude fandoms that could fall under an umbrella - like "DC comics" or "Batman" that sometimes have unique characters or universes.

So, how DO you nominate?

Re: Nominations are just a portion

[personal profile] silverr 2014-09-03 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
They'll open the Yuletide 2014 tagset at a certain point (I think someone said 22 Sept?). There's a nomination form on Ao3: You simply put in each fandom and the characters you're nominating in each. (Once you see the form you'll see that it's actually more straightforward than all the verbiage suggests.)

This is why there are "nomination posts" every year where people say what they plan to nominate in order to coordinate with other people who were planning to nominate than fandom: when people coordinate like this it's a way to get as many characters from that fandom in the tagset.

ETA: And participating in nominations is entirely optional ... although if you do want to request something that you're sure is rare, then usually it's a good idea to nominate it just in case.

Well, I'd like to, because I might have one or two things I doubt will even be requested.

Sometimes that works out though, because sometimes when people see something they get all "Oh yeah! I could write/would love to read that!"

There are links here if you want to see the range of fandoms that were part of last year's Yuletide.
