Yuletide

So, since Yuletide is starting up soon -- who here is participating? What are you planning on nominating? :3

I'm planning on participating for the first time. I posted on the Yuletide nominations post - someone else is thinking of nominating Transformers: Rescue Bots, so if that works out I'm likely to nominate it too. Even if they don't, I might go for it anyway. Other than that, I have no clue. I have several fandoms I'm considering, but I'm not sure which ones I actually have a chance at getting something in and which ones I might as well be shouting into the void.

Hey, that's cool! I hope it'll be a fun experience for you :)

You probably know this already, but if someone else is nominating the same fandom as you are, then you could use that slot for something else. Unless of course you want to nominate a different set of characters than the other person does, in which case you'd definitely want to keep it.

Also, don't worry about the whole "but will anyone else know this super-rate fandom of mine"! Seriously, just focus on yourself. Otherwise you might end up asking for something you don't really want just to be on the safe side, and that'll such for both you and your assigned writer. There's almost always someone out there who can write for you! One year, not a single person had offered any of the fandoms I'd requested -- so I went out on the pinch hit list right away. And guess what? Someone snapped me up! Hell, that was the one and only year where I even got a treat :Db

Thanks! I hope so too!

The thing is, it's an ensemble-cast show, and it's got at least nine main characters, so it would be nice to get as many of them in as possible. And yeah, I don't know what characters they want and it might not be the same ones I do.

Most of the fandoms I think I'd at least have a shot with, but one of them in particular is a text adventure called Dreamhold that's extremely obscure even for a text adventure. I'm not sure if it's worth wasting the nomination slot, but on the other hand there's that lingering feeling that I might actually get fic for it. I'll probably go for it, with the expectation of getting something else.

How does one even participate?

Re: Yuletide

http://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide/profile#participation is the best summary I can provide. I'd suggest you only try to read the rules if you're seriously interested in signing up, as they are a complex and confusing web.

DA

I got through "related fandoms" on the eligibility section of the rules on the LJ page and was just like "fuck all this noise." That is just too much, and I'm not sure why anyone would want to go through all that.

Well, for one you gotta sign up! ...Except not necessarily, you could still participate without officially signing up (writing treats, pinch hitting, etc.), so, uh -- like the person above said, it'd probably be best for you if you read through the official texts!

I'd be happy to try and answer more specific questions you might have afterwards, though :)

Nominations are just a portion

Yes, the nomination rules are pretty complex, but seriously, you don't need to worry about them if your fandom is really really tiny. Yuletide is all about small to tiny fandoms.

If your fandoms are medium-sized, then the only rule you need to pay attention to if you want to nominate (which is how you ensure that something you either want to write or request will be an option when it comes time for signups) is - Are there more than 1000 completed fics in English and over 1000 words for this fandom? checking that takes literally only a minute or two.

(Having said that, as I've done Yuletide on and off for almost 10 years, I'd be happy to check the counts for anyone. Feel free to PM me or post here.)

So, it's basically for smaller fandoms specifically?

I intend to sign up. This will be my second year, and I've been watching the Yueltide LJ as they figure out the new rules.

I'm kind of bummed nominations are down to 3 this year.

I'm still considering what I'm going to nominate. I was thinking of trying to get Unfinished Tales by Tolkien in. It's listed under Silmarillion, which is over the limit, but I have some super rare characters I'd love fic for and I think there's maybe an argument to be made to say they're different in UT. But, since I'm new, I feel like maybe this was all hashed out years ago already. I thought I might try it and post to the evidence post to see what people say, but maybe I'll wait another year so that it doesn't look like I'm trying to sneak The Hobbit in.

[identity profile] galerian-ash.livejournal.com 2014-09-02 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'll also miss the fourth nomination slot.

I'm not really familiar with those fandoms, but -- under the new rules -- it sounds to me like it should be okay. I've been doing Yuletide since 2007 (yikes), and I can't particularly remember much talk about it previously so you shouldn't worry about that! If you want to request it you should.

I'm going to! Last year was a blast: I wrote for Battle Royale and I got an amazing Kafka on the Shore fic.

I think I might try nominating Bounty Dog (this weird old sci-fi anime OVA I'm bizarrely attached to) again, but I haven't decided on any others yet.

That's awesome! I always have a blast too; I look forward to Yuletide all year long, haha.

Oooo, I've seen that anime! Ages ago, sure, but I'd be quite excited to see it nominated.

All I care about is more love for Everwood. Maybe Chris Pratt's sudden surge to superstardom will bring people back to it.

I'm in for my fourth year! So far only one of my fandoms has generated any interest on the brainstorming post, but I remain ever hopeful. I haven't see any of my other fandoms mentioned by someone else, but last year the ones I nominated for myself had a couple other requesters and several offers. C:

Oh, hey, you're the person nominating Sarai-ya Goyou! Fancy meeting you here ;D Wow, that probably sounded a lot more stalker-ish than I intended it to...

Participated last year and enjoyed it but I'm waiting to see what the noms look like before I decide if I want to give it another go this year. I've seen a couple fandoms I'd be up for writing floated around the brainstorming post so I'll have to see how it goes once actual nominations start up.

Meeeeee! Yuletide is always my favorite part of the fannish year.

IDK what I'll nominate and request. I always just wait until noms are done and then fill out my participation form based on what's there.

We're rewatching Deadwood, so that's a possibility for a request. Maybe True Blood if it's eligible.

Re: Yuletide

I would like to participate, but

a) I don't have an A03 account (livejournal yes)
b) I fear I wouldn't be able to reciprocate
c) I only have one fandom

If I did nominate anything, it would be BBC's Emma [the kate beckinsdale version], I really want to see a Joan/Knightley fic.

I didn't have an account before I signed up for Yuletide either. You can just email whoever's in charge and they'll set you right up. (It tells you where to email in the FAQs or wherever. Just say you want to participate in Yuletide.)

Though it is discouraged, you can nominate and then not participate in the actual exchange (at least once, I think). They would rather you didn't but if you nominated your fandom, you could be sure it was available for you then.

Then, when it comes time to actually signing up, you can see ahead of time what all the fandoms available are. You will have to choose more than one fandom to be willing to get as a gift (I think you have to choose four) but you can see ahead of time if there's enough fandoms you're willing to write or get. If you really only have one fandom, then it might not be worth it. But, on the other hand, if you REALLY want that one fic, this is probably one of the better opportunities to get it. It might take more than one year, but a lot of people get their super rare thing eventually.

I would also add, some people (not all) link to the material for their fandom. So, if someone wants a fandom for an old movie, they might link you to the movie on YouTube so then you can watch it and know what to write about. A lot of people learn about fandoms that way for treats, etc.
