Re: Favorite Character Flaws

It's hard to think of flaws I like when I only keep a mental Rolodex of flaws I hate and think are bullshit writing.

This perfect female character does have flaws you guys! She cares about her friends to much and is self-sacrificing to a fault! A totally legit flaw that girls in real life totally have. Bonus if she gets a "It's okay to be selfish" speech in canon. I will dive under a ice cream truck if I see this stupid arc ever again.

No you guys, this (usually male) character isn't perfect at all. All the strengths and mad skills he has totally make him a target of other people's scorn. He's really lonely deep down. People are just too intimidated by him. :((( Who cares. Can anyone but a douchebag relate to this?

I'm also really starting to notice male characters who's only real flaw is that they're adorkable. It's like a female-generated version of a Manic Pixie Dream Girl. Not intimidating or demanding emotionally, just a perfect cute boyfriend.

So I basically despise transparent attempts by the writers to deepen their Self-Inserts/Waifus without actually committing to despicable flaws with real consequences.

Actually, being too self-sacrificing is a flaw that a lot of real women have because they're raised to put the needs of others before their own. That's why you see so many burned-out moms - they're too busy attending to the needs of their family to stop and take any time for themselves, and they feel like they would be letting their family down if they did so.

da

Being self-sacrificing can be a good flaw, as long as it doesn't turn into the martyr complex crap.

Maybe so but it's never treated with the weight and dignity it deserves. It just serves to make the perfect female character more angelic. Often times it's even glorified by the narrative even though it's weakly scolded in the foreground.

The problem with "self-sacrificing" is that it's safe. The flaw basically boils down to "this person is so good of a person that they would rather suffer than have someone else suffer." Like... yeah so would Jesus Christ. Are you saying your character is so bad that they're Jesus-like? Wow, she needs to get it together.

And yeah, women in real life can be self-sacrificing, but a) I doubt they're happy about it the way fictional characters often serenely accept death as long as ~her loved ones are safe~ and b) what else is there? Self-sacrificing sure, but is she also snooty? Controlling? Judgmental? Volatile? Melodramatic? Vain? Genuinely repulsively stupid? Or hey, maybe the character could be resentful about her need to help others? Unhappy about it? The character is given no other real flaws besides "she would die for her friends". That's not reflective of reality. That's just self-indulgence because you're afraid to make your fictional girlfriend/self-insert "ugly" in any way. There are beautiful people in real life, but they are not perfect.
