Work rant

(Anonymous) 2014-09-03 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
It may be too soon to post another work rant thread, but I really want to rant about something that happened at work the other day.

I've been sick with the cold for the past 10(ish) days, and since I work the production line in a clean room environment, we have to gown up(yay smocks!) and wear hair nets, and we have this rule that if you're sick, you must wear a face mask so as not to get other employees sick and to keep the products we're building from getting contaminated. I've been wearing my mask for a week, and a coworker of mine began wearing one too the other day. She and I are female. When I was getting ready to leave for work on Monday she told me that our supervisor (who is a guy) saw her with her face mask and asked her if she and I had been making out and if I had gotten her sick as well.
She tried laughing it off and said to him that "yeah we were" because she said she didn't know what else to say, but when I heard it I was pretty disgusted. Since I didn't hear it myself, I don't think I can go to HR to complain about it, but GROSS! My supervisor just keeps doing things that make me want to work with him less and less.

So...anyone else frustrated with work?

I'm confused. Are you disgusted with him saying it (was he saying it seriously, or as a joke?) or were you disgusted with her playing along to end the conversation? Why were you disgusted? Is it because she's not a close friend and it's a weird thing to think about a relative stranger like that?

I only ask because it's not the first time people have made that joke and it never struck me as weird/gross/creepy/whatever unless they pushed it and made it creepy, which I've never seen happen (though I'm sure some idiot somewhere has).

Pretty sure OP meant the attitude of "girls kissing each other hurr hurr that's hot."

OP
I'm grossed out that my supervisor would say that. I'm sure he was saying it jokingly, but I don't get along with him that I am OK with him making jokes like that. I guess he found it OK since he gets along better with my coworker. I just wished she wouldn't have told me, because I would have felt so uncomfortable if he said it to me. He's just come off rather misogynistic to me, and that comment didn't make me think any better of him.

Ah. Yeah I guess it depends on who's making the joke/the intent behind it.

It's always creepy, even if you're really good friends, though it might be less insulting. It's sexualizing someone in a homophobic way that caters to a highly misogynistic society. Even as, maybe especially as, someone does kiss girls, it's creepy because someone is including me in their sex without my permission. We all have fantasies, including about people IRL, but if you're going to start spreading it around it becomes intrusive and uncomfortable. If you're going to do that shit, you become creepy.

I'm so bored with my job and I just want to quit. I currently work doing phone surveys and while an easy job, it's so mindless. Like, I work 2-4 days a week and most often do the same survey all through that week, meaning that sometimes I have the exact same conversation like 30-100 times a week depending on how long the survey is. Once I even did the same survey for about three months straight and talked to 20 people on average per night...

Also, it's extremely underpaid. I don't even know how they are allowed to pay us that little. I earn about as much per hour as a 15 year old would earn working in a grocery store. Unfortunately I can't afford to quit without getting a new job first. If I had gotten a job in a grocery store now, I would have earned about 1.5 times what I earn now, at least.

The only positive thing is that I can play games and such between phone calls.

That sounds super creepy. In what world is it appropriate to ask a question like that??

I'm actually doing much better with work, since my asshole manager got transferred, and my teenage co-worker who has an attitude the size of Texas got temporarily transferred to another different store as a form of pseudo-probation. She'll be back soon, though...
