I think that's perfectly acceptable. I'm just sort of the opposite but I suck at it.

Great background image. Also, there's nothing wrong with that. You do fandom your way.

Sorry, this was meant for the OP.

If you're saying what I think you're saying, I'll be your internet fandom friend kallanda! *Awards you one 'anon friendship' gold star for you to wear if people don't believe you have an friend on the internet*

Well hello new friend, nice to meet you!

You're not social, so I don't see that it matters all that much what some people might say.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
So you're antisocial. It happens. I'm not sure that reading fanfic alone is enough to be in a fandom. It's just... lurking.

So you can't be a fan if you don't produce? Huh!

ayrt

yep.

Producers don't matter without consumers.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I disagree with that idea, too, though I do think there is an interactive element to "being in fandom" that doesn't exactly fit with lurking (at least, not how I lurk).

Re: e_e

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
There are more than one way of lurking?

Ridiculous. You can fan and stan and use your hand all in the privacy of your own home and without contacting anyone else at all.

Alright? If you don't feel like making fandom friends that's okay. It's extremely easy to lurk, do your own thing and not have contact with people. (I did it for years.)

I enjoy both (reading, and talking) but it definitely takes more time and effort to make and maintain friendships, so...do what makes you happy?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see a problem with that at all. I enjoy participating in fandom here and there but I don't think I often make fandom friends anymore because I just don't have the time and energy for it. Sometimes it's nice to just lurk and not really be known.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Okay? So just read fic and don't engage in discussion with people. Interaction isn't a prerequisite for being a fan.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
I'm an active part of my fandom (read, write and review fic) and I still feel this way, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
The term was meant to be "strong" as in "can stand on her own as character." But then people took it literal.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, don't feel bad. I'm only on lj/ff.net for the writing of fic and reading of it.

Part of me kind of wants to make friends, but it's not that serious to me. I prefer enjoying the fic, perhaps sharing ideas, and writing the fic.

I hear about all the wank and nonsense. I just want a place to gush about characters/read great fic/maybe write something I'd like to see.

ENJOY YOURSELF.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
What an incredibly cute photo!

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm with you there, OP. I've dealt with enough fandom drama that I'm now at the point where I'd rather just enjoy fanworks, leave the occasional review on them and that's about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I'm very selective about who I engage with on fandom things these days and I'm much happier for it. I pick and choose the people I interact with so I make friends with the cool ones and ignore the crazies.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
I like your way of thinking.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 09:30 am (UTC)(link)
I can understand where you're coming from, OP. Especially since on LJ, there's a whole thing where you have to have a friends' list miles long. I'm always happier with just a few close friends, but noooooo. It's like it was the precursor to Facebook and their billions of friends system.

That picture is absolutely adorable and perfect, BTW.
