There's no guarantees, of course, but honestly, write what makes you happy -- and if the teeming masses don't like it, well, they can go fart in a paper bag.

Ah, yes, the elusive genfic. Still, there do seem to be more and more active comms for it. (*points to the

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 02:42 am (UTC)(link)WRITE IT. Believe me when I say there's always one other person out there waiting for the good stuff you're waiting for too. It's just no one has written it yet. AHEM. YOU. At least give it a shot. You don't have to post it, but if you do, rest assured someone else will probably enjoy it. Even if they never comment or rate or whatever your site does.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 04:16 am (UTC)(link)It's a good idea if OP decides to share their work with the fandom. They'll probably find others who think like them, and who knows? Maybe others will write similar fics.
But they'd better lose the "my work is automatically so much more intelligent than what the masses like" attitude. That's an instant deal breaker for me, no matter how good the work is. (Also, don't complain of how you're being ignored if your fic is not widely recognized by fandom. If you're fulfilling a niche market, don't expect it to be the most popular fic in fandom).

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 05:21 am (UTC)(link)Depends on the fandom's size and also its orthodoxy. I've seen brilliantly-written rarepair fics in my fandom and they post to the music of crickets... maybe one or two comments if they're very lucky. The juggernaut pairing tends to squeeze everything else out.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 09:40 am (UTC)(link)I'm talking "My Immortal" levels of hideousness here.
I don't think it's being stuck up if an author legitimately feels they can write better quality fic than what they're finding in a fandom.
Though I may be biased, since I'm currently "re-writing" a fanfic for my own personal enjoyment because the ideas and plot had so much potential, yet even the original author goes on about how bad it is, and they have publicly stated they don't care. *twitch*

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 05:52 am (UTC)(link)I'm pretty much the opposite. When the average fic is super good, I get very intimidated and feel skittish about writing/posting; when average fic is just okay, I feel more brave.
Maybe it would help if you remind yourself that you might be the only one who will write what you want to see. That keeps me coming back to a story I've been slowly working on for ages...
