Do eeeeet. I'm convinced people are waiting for fic like that<:

It comes down to this: Just because what's out there for your fandom is OOC crap and/or smut, doesn't mean that there isn't a pent-up desire for well-written, IC genfic.

There's no guarantees, of course, but honestly, write what makes you happy -- and if the teeming masses don't like it, well, they can go fart in a paper bag.

Could be, but the poster is talking about their "new OTP". Sounds like pairingfic, not genfic.

(Not that I don't LOVE well-written genfic... *wistful noise*)

(Ah, you're right, I should have scrolled back up and checked the image; I only remeembered that they complained about OOC and smut.)

Ah, yes, the elusive genfic. Still, there do seem to be more and more active comms for it. (*points to the [community profile] mcugen comm*)

I think you should go ahead and do it, OP. You'll be filling a void. And, really, there are probably others out there who are like you, but who just haven't the gumption to write.

Do it, OP! The worst possible outcome is that your fic ends up badly written, and even then other people may pick up the idea and do their own.

(or mention the OTP here and hope someone fills the void)

*ray liotta voice*

if you write it... they will come...

Echoing the words of fellow posters,

WRITE IT. Believe me when I say there's always one other person out there waiting for the good stuff you're waiting for too. It's just no one has written it yet. AHEM. YOU. At least give it a shot. You don't have to post it, but if you do, rest assured someone else will probably enjoy it. Even if they never comment or rate or whatever your site does.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Write it, but get over yourself and the thought that people wouldn't like your fic because your tastes are so much smarter and better than the rest of fandom's.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
This.

It's a good idea if OP decides to share their work with the fandom. They'll probably find others who think like them, and who knows? Maybe others will write similar fics.

But they'd better lose the "my work is automatically so much more intelligent than what the masses like" attitude. That's an instant deal breaker for me, no matter how good the work is. (Also, don't complain of how you're being ignored if your fic is not widely recognized by fandom. If you're fulfilling a niche market, don't expect it to be the most popular fic in fandom).

Depends on the fandom's size and also its orthodoxy. I've seen brilliantly-written rarepair fics in my fandom and they post to the music of crickets... maybe one or two comments if they're very lucky. The juggernaut pairing tends to squeeze everything else out.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
So I take it you've never been in a fandom where 99% of the fic is written by sugar high teenagers (or adults who act and write like sugar high teenagers)? I have.

I'm talking "My Immortal" levels of hideousness here.

I don't think it's being stuck up if an author legitimately feels they can write better quality fic than what they're finding in a fandom.

Though I may be biased, since I'm currently "re-writing" a fanfic for my own personal enjoyment because the ideas and plot had so much potential, yet even the original author goes on about how bad it is, and they have publicly stated they don't care. *twitch*

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Please do it!!!! You don't know how many people might be out there clamoring for what you could provide!!

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
...if your fandom is full of fluff, then won't you stand out (in a good way) if you write bleakness and complexity? There should be an audience if the series itself is like that. Canon is what initially drew in fans, after all.

I'm pretty much the opposite. When the average fic is super good, I get very intimidated and feel skittish about writing/posting; when average fic is just okay, I feel more brave.

Maybe it would help if you remind yourself that you might be the only one who will write what you want to see. That keeps me coming back to a story I've been slowly working on for ages...

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
probably not your fandom, but I can't help but think of JeanMarco from attack on titan.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 06:15 am (UTC)(link)
Attack on Titan was my first thought too.

Put some thought into your double 'i's there.

Maybe everyone else who wants that sort of fic is thinking the same thing, and you'll be the first one to dare post it.
