You don't see any difference? Really? They seem like completely different characters with completely different personalities. All they have in common, really, is being brunette and being members of the BAU.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
This.

They're personalities are really different.

They do look similar and neither is a favorite character of mine, but I can't think of too much they had in common otherwise.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
On a kind of casual level they're the bruiser/action girl trope... in the episodes that aren't really focused on them I could see them coming off as pretty similar.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, this.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Well, so could Mandy Patinkin's character & Rossi and/or Hotch. Gruff, tortured leaders.

Or Hotch and Derek. Stoic leading men.

Or Prentiss & Derek, actually. Derek fits the Bruiser character type too.

But if you actually pay attention to the show you notice they are actually all quite well drawn, distinct characters, especially for a procedural. I think some people just expected Prentiss to be Elle all but in name just because they're both brunettes & one was replacing the other, and a little bit because they're women & female characters can be written very flatly & used only as plot devices.

Exactly!

Elle's character was written out with her impulsiveness. Emily was pretty much the definition of cool and calm. If it had been Elle, for example, infiltrating Luke Perry's cult with Reid, she would've punched him and gotten both of them killed (hypothetical character development across the seasons not withstanding).

I just watched the S1 finale and with everything that happened, the thing that stood out the most to me was Hotch walking into the interrogation room and, without missing a beat, he just takes off his jacket and gives it to Elle, who's handcuffed to a chair in her underwear.

I don't know why that made such an impression on me - I don't really ship it - but I loved that moment.

(Also, to clarify, my first episodes were the Tobias Hankel ones in season 2, and I watched about two or three seasons after that before falling away. And then I realized on this watch through that I'd seen in syndication the season one episode where they're dealing with the cult that thinks they're Apache. And when I saw it then, it didn't even register that Elle wasn't Emily.)

Yeah, that's a lovely Hotch moment there. ♥ Made an impression on me, too. Also, those other episodes you mentioned have lots of great Hotch moments as well. *g*

Completely serious: might you have issues with facial recognition? Some people are somewhat faceblind.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
No, that is not an issue with me at all, and honestly I sort of assume more than a fair portion of all the faceblind claims that pop up here are really just people who don't pay enough attention.

I've been watching the eps all out of order but I've seen plenty with both Elle and Emily. They come across as completely different to me. They're both brunette, but that's as far as the similarity goes to me.

Are you thinking Allison was the same as them characterization-wise?
Edited 2014-09-04 00:55 (UTC)

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I hadn't really given Allison much thought in that regard. I was referring more to the common criticism that essentially Erica became Cora became Malia until Stiles was finally dating a were-creature on TW.

Wait...Criminal Minds Jeff Davis is the same guy as Teen Wolf Jeff Davis?! I always thought it was a different dude.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
it IS the same guy? I watched my first episode of Criminal Minds the other day and saw Jeff Davis and was like, "That has to be a different guy". Especially considering the nice things I constantly hear about Criminal Minds.

^^^ Came here to say this.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
There's a huge difference

and Prentiss is better

They have superficial similarities.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
In that they are female, brunette, and tough (although in different ways, I would argue). Emily is much more pulled into herself. Elle can be much more abrasive. They can both be sarcastic, but at different levels. And from what I've seen, they have different backgrounds, different reactions, different issues, and different interactions with other characters.

As for Teen Wolf, I can't say Cora really struck me as much like Erica and Malia doesn't really remind me of either (except, again, they all have a certain toughness to them, but I would, again, argue that toughness is different in each of them. Cora actually reminded me of first season Derek which made complete sense to me.

Jeff Davis barely has any connection to CM--he helped create it but the actual show runner for the first five or six seasons was Ed Bernero.

Davis had no hand in the creation of the Prentiss character as he wasn't even working on CM at that time (he left early in the first season, iirc). So, I'm sorry, but you can't put this all on Davis.

"Prentiss isn't Elle?" Who the hell says that? All I've ever seen is "Prentiss is awesome, so glad Elle's gone."

I'm one of them. I loved Prentiss and haven't watched since she left. The second time.

I say that. I hated Prentiss and loved Elle. Prentiss just rubbed me the wrong way, right from the beginning and how she got on the team. I'm glad she's gone and hope they never bring her back. Even Jennifer Love Hewitt can't be worse.

Oh, man, I see HUGE differences. Elle had a major chip on her shoulder from the very beginning and was never much of a team player. Emily had something to prove about her abilities, but she was never, ever as antagonistic about it as Elle, nor as combative. She also had much better rapport with the rest of the team and I found her to be a far more likeable character because of that.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, you really articulated a lot better the reasons I prefer Prentiss to Elle. A+, anon.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
When I first started watching CM, it was out of order. So there was a mix of Elle & Emily. I didn't notice a difference. I even argued with Mom that they were the same person. It wasn't until we watched them in order that I realized that they were, indeed, 2 separate people. And now, I don't even know how I didn't notice the huge differences between the actresses/characters.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 05:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's pretty much how it is/will be with me. It doesn't help that I haven't seen Emily in about five years, that's how long I've been away. But apparently this confusion is a cardinal sin in the Criminal Minds world.
