If someone could fill me in on the backstory of this, I'd appreciate it.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
It's honestly not worth paying attention to.

That said, broad strokes: Person (Zoe Quinn) made game, had boyfriend. They broke up, boyfriend alleged that she cheated on him multiple times, allegedly with game journalists, allegedly including some who gave her positive coverage for the game. 4chan got ahold of it and went buck wild and the whole thing descended into the usual Internet controversy storm.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
it is especially stupid because the person she allegedly slept with for a positive review, never wrote one. ever.

Its a bunch of lies because guys are mad that a girl is making games.
even if did cheat, it's not illegal, she's an adult and it's her body.
and maybe it's just a bitter ex making up lies.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
well, like, if she did cheat, i feel comfortable saying that i don't think that's okay and that cheating was wrong

but that's pretty much where my involvement ends, any interest in extending the criticism beyond that basic opinion is pretty much fucking stupid in my opinion

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
yeah cheating is bad, but I also dont think it should effect her career. these guys saying her career should be impacted cause she had sex with someone are friggin creeps.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
well, sure.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, you need to at least try to separate the art from the artist.

That said, gaming journalism is awful.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
the primary reason 4chan got involved in this is cos zoe fake!doxxed herself on her blog for sympathy/damage control (fake!doxxed like, didn't put out her real information) and blamed it on "/V/". not sure why this is being left out of the retelling cos this is, again, a case of someone thought 4chan would make a good scapegoat, kicked the hornets nest, and immediately regretted it when the hornets come out like YO YOU WOKE THE KRAKEN

#gamergate is the hashtag where a lot of this has been going down. It's shifted from the original focus on Zoe Quinn to a focus on how awful gaming journalism is.

The wank out of this has been fucking hilarious though.

She also got a website for a charity that tries to help people into medias they may not have an easy way into DDosed and laughed about it on twitter.

She overall problem that people are upset about is that game makers and game "journalists" are all friends, support each others patreons, and give each other favorable reviews and don't disclose their relationships. Even as friends.

The unrest has been there for a while. People mad about game companies paying for reviews. People getting fired for not giving sponsored games great reviews. People are using the coverage of this Zoe Quinn thing to try to get some attention to how gaming journalism has been.

Journalists have reacted by posting over a dozen articles in one day about how gamers are terrible people. They're essentially shitting on their audience because they're questioning their ethics.

GASP

THE NERVE

*snicker*

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah the nerve. At least Kotaku, I think, made an announcement that they can no longer do this. It's a conflict of interest to support someone you're supposed to be reporting on objectively.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I...are you serious, dude? There's a very clear conflict of interest, here -- not so much in the supporting of patreons, but certainly in the writing of favorable reviews for friends.
