It's still going on. I'm amazed that it's lasted this long.

i'm not.

after all, team 'gamer' is now really, really passionate about corruption in their journalism — like a hundred times more passionate now than ever before! (spoiler: it's because a woman did a thing.) so dirt on anyone and anything related to zoe quinn and her, uh, associates is at a premium, and these great warriors fighting for the gamer cause will stop at nothing to justify their outcry!

because it's not about misogyny, it's about journalistic integrity — about how they, as 'gamers,' deserve better from their media coverage!

meanwhile, something in real life that happened like a decade ago: http://www.projectcensored.org/11-the-media-can-legally-lie/

journalistic integrity has a waaaaays to go. buckle up, kids, it's going to be a long fucking ride.

What really pisses me off isn't that it's gone on for so long, but that so many other people are being dragged into it, as if Zoe's actions somehow delegitimize feminism in video games. They've started going after Anita again, this time so hard that she had to stay at a friend's house because she was so scared.

What was her crime? She made a feminist critique of video games. People have started comparing her to Jack Thompson when she's basically a fucking film critic. There have been feminist critiques of films, TV, and books, and yet nobody's howling about how feminists want to censor and destroy television, movies, or what have you. It shows you how puerile these people are - they interpret any critique of games as a threat to censor them, and think that games should be mindless entertainment without any attempts to analyze them. And it's pretty clear the people who criticize her haven't even watched her videos, they're just going by what other people say about her; she outright said that a game isn't necessarily bad just because it has a sexist trope in it, and people who play these games and enjoy them aren't automatically terrible sexist people. She never mentioned banning games that already had these tropes in them or censoring future games. Not to mention all the people complaining about her closing her Youtube comments without understanding the definition of "free speech." The laws only ensure that the government won't arrest you or impinge upon your right to express opinions, not that privately owned sites couldn't ban you for being an asshat.

Sorry for the rant, but I just fucking hate 4chan right now. I used to like going there because the style of posting appealed to my internet social anxiety, but now I can't stand the place anymore. It feels like it's been hijacked by a bunch of shrieking manbabies who can't handle people with different opinions.

And even if it turns out that Zoe did underhanded things, I don't think she deserves the sheer level of vitriol being hurled at her. If you're really going after "corruption" in gaming journalism, then go after the guys she allegedly slept with. This matter should have been settled privately between her and her boyfriend, and should have ended with the breakup.

Judging by the interview of her ex, he regrets releasing the info online. Either he's so clueless about gaming culture that he didn't know how many people would start baying for Zoe's blood, or he knew exactly what he was doing but didn't anticipate the sheer scale of the reaction and how bad it makes him look, and is now backpedaling hard enough to power a large generator. I don't know what actually happened, I don't know either of them personally, but I just want these stupid death threats and feminilluminati conspiracy theories to stop.

Is she related to MySpace? Why is Tom from MySpace in the background?

Mostly... wow. This shit makes me wish wank were still "your OTP sucks and mine is so canon." We had it easy.

Man internet threats don't mean shit and I'm tired of people acting like they do ONLY when they are aimed at women.

It's just a shitty way of expressing anger.

Something tells me most of those replies are people telling whoever posted that not to be a shit. That's the part no one shows.

Let's do a little archive surfing. Yeah the post was deleted. No one agreed and told them to fuck off.

Man like

I'm not a big fan of cheating but since when did it become the done thing to get Internet gangs together and go around shaming people who cheat (let alone actually enforcing them like some kind of medieval village morality squad)

and it really seems like that's something like 60% of what this whole imbroglio is

/v/ designing a woman who agrees with them about everything and saying that's real feminism seems pretty par for the course actually.

I'm glad the Young Capitalists profited from all this bullshit bit it's pretty obvious /v/ would dismiss them as sjws if they'd heard about them before this mess.

According to the text they sent for the create-a-character incentive, her personality is:
Tough-loves video games
Loathes dishonesty and hypocrisy
Low affect, grumpy, perpetually fed up and tired.

Let me guess. You have strong opinions about some little known indie developer who fucked a dude and made her ex angry.

If there's one thing to be learned from this, it's that games reporting has gone all to hell. The reporters keep trying to frame everything as being about sexism against Zoe Quinn and folks who support her, which means anyone who doesn't like her is at best ignored, and at worst becomes the enemy. This includes polite, reasonable folks who've been subjected to death and rape threats similar to those levied against Quinn.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
And a majority of the gamers are trying to get talk of Zoe out of the picture but she's actively baiting people on twitter.

Everyone is being threatened and told to kill themselves. A 10 year old kid had his pictures posted from facebook as a threat for defending Gamers. This is ridiculous.

More than anything else, this just deepens my conviction that gamer culture is decadent and depraved and should not be paid attention to by anyone.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
If someone could fill me in on the backstory of this, I'd appreciate it.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
It's honestly not worth paying attention to.

That said, broad strokes: Person (Zoe Quinn) made game, had boyfriend. They broke up, boyfriend alleged that she cheated on him multiple times, allegedly with game journalists, allegedly including some who gave her positive coverage for the game. 4chan got ahold of it and went buck wild and the whole thing descended into the usual Internet controversy storm.

#gamergate is the hashtag where a lot of this has been going down. It's shifted from the original focus on Zoe Quinn to a focus on how awful gaming journalism is.

The wank out of this has been fucking hilarious though.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
She also got a website for a charity that tries to help people into medias they may not have an easy way into DDosed and laughed about it on twitter.

She overall problem that people are upset about is that game makers and game "journalists" are all friends, support each others patreons, and give each other favorable reviews and don't disclose their relationships. Even as friends.

The unrest has been there for a while. People mad about game companies paying for reviews. People getting fired for not giving sponsored games great reviews. People are using the coverage of this Zoe Quinn thing to try to get some attention to how gaming journalism has been.

Journalists have reacted by posting over a dozen articles in one day about how gamers are terrible people. They're essentially shitting on their audience because they're questioning their ethics.

The part I hate is that this "Silver-string Media" company actively, openly, and gleefully sabotaged a charity game jam for women for no legitimate reason. That is incredibly fucked up imho
