I don't know who Joan Rivers is, but I don't think you should get upset over that comment. I mean, it makes no sense! For starters, what people deem as "shitty" very much differs from person to person. Secondly, I think pretty much everyone has done something that they regret or think was bad. Also, "you're murdering us all"? Huh?

Yeah you're right. I eventually moved past it but in the back of my mind I feel bother by any depressed people who might see it.

Also the "murdering us all" thing I guess was referring to their rant about the world being overpopulated.

Joan Rivers was a comedienne from the 1980s who segued into the daytime talk show host arena, then by the 1990s into nighttime TV, most recently with her daughter Melissa, and one of their main gigs was basically providing color commentary on awards shows. She had an amazing work ethic, was a household name, and very, very funny, often making jokes at her own expense.

Until recently when she chose to tear others (mostly women) apart instead of humour at her own expense. Don't leave out the bad shit, dude.

Not aware of the recent events you're referring to. She doesn't deserve to have her long life and career discounted just because she said something the lynch mob on Twitblr disagreed with.

You ever watched Fashion Police? Because that show is totally about tearing other people down, and mostly women.

Re: tw: general assholery and nastiness

(Anonymous) 2014-09-04 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
In a sarcastic way. Because the people they "tore down" are in the top 5th percentile of societal standards of "beautiful" so the only way one could take those comments in a negative way, would be if you had absolutely no sense of humor whatsoever. Which SJWs don't, so, w/e

OH dear god

If you are saying making fun of people's outfits is "tearing down women" then I can't even

Your t-shirt is probably lame

Well, I'd argue that the show goes out of its way to enforce gender norms and to riducule women in particular who step outside of that.

But Mostly I'm referring specifically to the biting, nasty, often personal comments Joan makes. Not the other people on the show, just her. She makes comments that have nothing to do with the clothes and that, yes, are "tearing women down."

Yes, look at her gender normed sidekicks, Flamboyant Gay Man and The Punk Chick From The Osbornes Who Is In A Mowhawk Thingy

I weep for the incredibly rich people whose incredibly expensive dresses she's ridiculing

"your t-shirt is probably lame" is going to be my go-to insult from now on

I don't think that was entirely a recent thing, although she usually followed the "punch up" rule by mocking stars higher than her pay grade.

It's interesting to see people defend her "punching up" against the horrible tumblr hivemind when usually people around here are complaining about the tumblr hivemind doing the punching up.

Re: tw: general assholery and nastiness

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2014-09-05 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well, first of all, she was a professional comedian, so that's part of her job description. I wasn't especially defending her, just commenting on what I saw of some of her earlier comedy. I don't think she was particularly funny or insightful.

But the tumblr hivemind doesn't "punch up" so much as flail around blindly with a set of nunchakus in each hand. "Punching up" requires having a bit more insight and wit than, "If you say ___ I will wreck you!"

I'm wondering now if we've heard different definitions of punching up because your tumblr comment sounds nothing like any definition of it that I've heard. I mean, yeah that's something they do, but I was thinking more about the misandry jokes and the way certain groups fight to be at the bottom of the totem pole so that they can have the right to insult each other because then it will be punching up instead of punching down and they're way too invested in being justified in insulting people. fs is generally not a fan of that stuff, but apparently making fun of rich people is different. I just found it interesting. I didn't think you were particularly defending her (and honestly I don't have much of an opinion on her either way so I wouldn't care if you were), it's just that it was your comment that made me think of it.

I've only heard it in the context of the ethics of professional comedy, not the oppression olympics bullshit that's floats around tumblr (and some parts of livejournal.)
