So basically half of tumblr was celebrating the news that Joan Rivers died and when called out one person made a upsetting comment. Something to the effect of "if you've ever done or supported anything shitty you OWE it to the world to die or you're murdering us all"

I know it's probably someone being an asshole but for some reason when I saw that (after having a stressful day at work) ...I just got REALLY upset about it. That's like uber shitty.

I dunno....but that's what they said They coupled it with some stuff about how the world's overpopulated. I guess that was their angle. Still seems like a dumb excuse to tell people they owe it you to die.

You laughed at that joke about blonde women? You LITERALLY just murdered hundreds of women. It is like the whole, "Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings."

What do the SJWs have against Joan Rivers?? Wait, you know what, I honestly do not want to know the answer to that. Bleeeeaaaarrrggggh. :-(

Well, to start with, she's not known for her sensitivity. She had some pretty shitty things to say about female celebrities' bodies. Not that I endorse people celebrating her death, I just know she wasn't really a constant ray of sunshine in her public life.

I don't know who Joan Rivers is, but I don't think you should get upset over that comment. I mean, it makes no sense! For starters, what people deem as "shitty" very much differs from person to person. Secondly, I think pretty much everyone has done something that they regret or think was bad. Also, "you're murdering us all"? Huh?

Yeah you're right. I eventually moved past it but in the back of my mind I feel bother by any depressed people who might see it.

Also the "murdering us all" thing I guess was referring to their rant about the world being overpopulated.

Joan Rivers was a comedienne from the 1980s who segued into the daytime talk show host arena, then by the 1990s into nighttime TV, most recently with her daughter Melissa, and one of their main gigs was basically providing color commentary on awards shows. She had an amazing work ethic, was a household name, and very, very funny, often making jokes at her own expense.

Hm.

I didn't really know who Joan Rivers was and what the controversy about her was, so I had to look her up on Wikipedia. Apparently she's made jokes about the Holocaust (she is Jewish), the Ariel Castro kidnappings, and fat-shamed celebrities like Adele.

I DON'T think that stuff is okay, but I do wonder if people would be so vitriolic if one of the male "comedians" who basically does the same thing or worse died? People seem to have more of an expectation of empathy for females.

And of course, there is no need to celebrate a death, unless the person was terrible beyond being a regular asshole, like I wouldn't judge people for celebrating Bin Laden or Ariel Castro's deaths. Otherwise, have some respect for the person's family.

Ah.

I honestly don't think she's above crit either personally. I'm just bugged by the whole "celebrating her death right after it happened" thing. That's tacky.

Also I was bugged by that one comment mostly because it was kind of fucked up. *shrug* the whole air of "if you've done something shitty (and you probably have unless you're Fred Rogers) you owe it the world to die" just ...erk.

Though I probably look stupid making a whole thread about it. Sorry.

She died doing what she loved.

I normally wouldn't laugh. But that is totally something she'd laugh at and find funny.

I do think she'd find that funny, but jsyk the surgery wasn't elective body modification, it was to treat a genuine health problem.

That's fucked up. I wasn't a fan but it's pretty twisted to celebrate somebody's death, provided that somebody hasn't committed ACTUAL ATROCITIES.

Remember the old equation

internet + anonymity = asshole

Even in limited degrees of anonymity, it holds true.

Some people are halfway decent people who get in an odd state of mind, say something shitty, and get carried away with it, even to the point where they make no sense.

And then there are simply shitty people.

It's one thing to feel relief at a death (if say, a person was a threat to you), but anyone who takes genuine pleasure and joy in another person's/being's/creature's/living thing's death has mental issues.

I'll guess some of those people were trolls though.

I won't lie and say I liked her (and for all I know she might've been lovely in person), but I see nothing to be happy about. She has a family and friends who are surely devastated. It still sucks.

The whole, "If you've ever done or supported anything shitty you should die" comment is downright laughable. If that was the case then there wouldn't be anyone left on the planet.

People who are attacking Joan Rivers because she had a catty sense of humor regarding celebrities need to get a grip. There are so many other people out there in the world who are doing shittier things who deserve to be called complete scum compared to her. She never did anything illegal or detrimental to anyone else as far as we know; let her rest in peace.
