Adorable high school girl is the Japanese equivalent of grizzled 30-something male protagonist in Western media. If that's your lead character I'm already markedly less interested in your product.

That said I'm sure you could make the "but that's the demographic for these games" argument.

How do you find any games to play if you avoid grizzled 30-something male protags?

I'll still play them if they have other sufficiently interesting aspects, but the stereotypical protagonist is a huge negative. And there are other negatives I'll overlook if the protagonist is something more original.

Unfortunately, as you point out, if I flat out refused to play any games like that, I'd be playing almost no AAA games anymore.

I think you'll be happy to know that the protagonist is very much non-stereotype, and is her own character as opposed "generic visual novel protagonist".

The story is pretty good, and if you don't have a PSP you can find a let's play of the game on Youtube.

Part of making this secret was to let more people know about this wonderful game!

On the Western side of games, without grizzled 30-something male.
Jak and Daxter
Spongebob Squarepants
Wallace & Gromit
Portal

Meanwhile on the Japanese side, without a schoolgirl as the main character.
Fire Emblem
Professor Layton
Ace Attorney

These are just the games I've been playing most recently. I realized I subconsciously avoid all games with a stereotypical protag. I don't even know I'm doing it, I just look at the pack pictures and go "not for me".

However, I did just also buy Hatoful Boyfriend, in which you play a young female Japanese student, so obviously there are exceptions if there's pigeon boyfriends up for grabs.
