But none of the romantic interests are twice her age though.

I get your point though. I'd love to have adult protaganists/love interests in otome games and visual novels in general. Kinda tired of highschool students.

Preach.

It's a bit frustrating. There's a lot of good visual novels out there, but I get tired of high school hijinks and the focus on high school. Which unfortunately is the most common setting. Even if there's supernatural or fantasy elements, they will still manage to shoehorn it into a highschool setting.

You know how in the US they say "high school is the best years of your life" but it's not true? In Japan, it actually is. Everything sucks after high school. Everything. That's why they always have young people in their media -- it's because that's when all the good things happened, before their souls were sucked out of them by a university and work culture that literally drives people to suicide.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
That is actually a really good point that I was already kind of familiar with Japanese culture, but forgot about how strong it is until you mentioned it like that. :o

I know it makes sense for the home country's demographic (while also at the same time assuming that western fans of otome games are familiar with genre conventions [so that way they can subvert the heck out of them with the protag]), but still it takes me out of the zone whenever I'm getting skeeved out by what are supposed to be the most romantic moments of the game.

Everything is perfect until I see adult characters reciprocate a kiss by a high schooler. D:

Ayrt

I'm fully aware of that. And while I know that defaulting to high school settings is their default setting for escapism, I really wish that there was a bit more variety.

There's nothing inherently bad about age gaps.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
If they're adult/minor, yeah there is.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
That's such an arbitrary (and bullshit) concept. It's okay to date a 18 years old boy/girl but you deserve to rot in hell if they are 17 and 11 months!

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Nobody's talking about a 19 year old and a 17 year old or something. If you're like 28 and you're hitting on a 17 year old, for example, you need to grow up.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
What if they are both in love? Should they not be together just because it's ~wrong~?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
You are trying too hard.

^Agree with everything in this post

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
but yeah, I'm the OP, and someone that I know IRL that was a 16 year old girl was dating someone who is 24, and now she has a baby. I felt like kicking her husband's ass so hard when I saw him. Although yes, he's taking responsibility by living married life with her, the feeling still hasn't quite gone away yet.

ohhh, i heard about this game. it sounded like it was fun... but i have no idea how to set it up and play it.

Adorable high school girl is the Japanese equivalent of grizzled 30-something male protagonist in Western media. If that's your lead character I'm already markedly less interested in your product.

That said I'm sure you could make the "but that's the demographic for these games" argument.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
How do you find any games to play if you avoid grizzled 30-something male protags?

[personal profile] ariakas 2014-09-05 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'll still play them if they have other sufficiently interesting aspects, but the stereotypical protagonist is a huge negative. And there are other negatives I'll overlook if the protagonist is something more original.

Unfortunately, as you point out, if I flat out refused to play any games like that, I'd be playing almost no AAA games anymore.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
I think you'll be happy to know that the protagonist is very much non-stereotype, and is her own character as opposed "generic visual novel protagonist".

The story is pretty good, and if you don't have a PSP you can find a let's play of the game on Youtube.

Part of making this secret was to let more people know about this wonderful game!

On the Western side of games, without grizzled 30-something male.
Jak and Daxter
Spongebob Squarepants
Wallace & Gromit
Portal

Meanwhile on the Japanese side, without a schoolgirl as the main character.
Fire Emblem
Professor Layton
Ace Attorney

These are just the games I've been playing most recently. I realized I subconsciously avoid all games with a stereotypical protag. I don't even know I'm doing it, I just look at the pack pictures and go "not for me".

However, I did just also buy Hatoful Boyfriend, in which you play a young female Japanese student, so obviously there are exceptions if there's pigeon boyfriends up for grabs.
