The opening scene was incredibly jarring even if you don't have a personal connection. I don't have a mom who died from cancer (though my grandma did when I was 10) and I still cried. I'm sorry the movie was wrecked for you, OP.

Same. I've known people who died of cancer, but never a close family member; it still really shocked and upset me. (Though, the bit at the end with the present was one of my favorite bits in the entire film. It was incredibly sweet and lovely.)

Same here. It's a very upsetting scene and one that surprised me, I wasn't expecting something that heavy from what looked like a goofy film in the first 10 mins.
