You and me both, anon. That was a fun surprise!

(Anonymous) 2014-09-05 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
That sucks, anon. I'm sorry.

While it didn't ruin the rest of the movie for me, my mom also died of cancer when I was younger and that whole opening was a shock.

I'm actually surprised it didn't effect me because I usually don't watch cancer movies. My mother didn't die of cancer, but she was pretty sick and we thought she was going to. That being said, after the first time, I mostly zone out and close my eyes until we get to adult Peter. The first time, the scene was so short that I was affected a bit but then I got into the movie and was okay.

The opening scene was incredibly jarring even if you don't have a personal connection. I don't have a mom who died from cancer (though my grandma did when I was 10) and I still cried. I'm sorry the movie was wrecked for you, OP.

Same. I've known people who died of cancer, but never a close family member; it still really shocked and upset me. (Though, the bit at the end with the present was one of my favorite bits in the entire film. It was incredibly sweet and lovely.)

I'm sorry too though, OP.

Same here. It's a very upsetting scene and one that surprised me, I wasn't expecting something that heavy from what looked like a goofy film in the first 10 mins.

I'm sorry OP.

"I mean a mom dying of cancer, not an alien abduction."

Thanks for clearing that up.

Then again, given how the internet works, you would have to clarify...

It didn't spoil my experience (and it wasn't my mom, but my grandpa did, and my dad's currently being treated for it) - but yeah, it did make it really emotional for me, and it caught me totally off guard.

For me it was the visuals. Because I had 3 grandparents die of cancer, but I never actually saw them dying. Whereas my mother didn't die, but I saw her in a hospital bed like that, bald and clearly really sick. So now every time I see the movie I close my eyes at that scene and then once I get past it everything else is awesome.

Yeah, I totally get that. Thing is, I know that there are a few things that will upset/disturb me in fiction, but I've never gotten to the point where I actually left the movie. One time I did cry in the car afterwards, but that was the worst case scenario.

The thing is I dislike spoilers so I just...risk it. Also I'm way too stubborn to let it affect my choice in movies, and I want to see all Marvel things anyway.

I actually arrived late and only caught the very tail end of the scene, which is probably for the best. I wasn't expecting it either. I'm just thankful it was quite a "movie-fied" death where she sounded fine until she died. That wasn't the case for my mother, which kept it an a comfortable emotional distance.

While the opening didn't ruin the experience for me (my mom died of cancer when I was younger), that still sucks, OP, and I'm so sorry. *hug*

Tbh, I think I felt a little closer to Quill's character after watching his backstory because I went through a similar tragedy, but yeah, it was still unnerving-as-fuck.

Oh OP, I'm so sorry. It wasn't my mother, but I lost a loved one to cancer within the past year, and as a result, that scene had me crying. It was definitely a tough few minutes, very difficult to sit through.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't expecting the opening, going in without knowing anything about the movie. My aunt died of cancer just a year ago, so I guess the opening should've been shocking and emotional to me, but... all I could think was, "bad make-up, the actress doesn't look like she's dying of cancer."

(I guess it was a defensive thought, because I really didn't want to think about my aunt dying during a supposedly fun movie.)

+1 For me it was an aunt, not my mother, but it still completely threw me out of the movie and made me unable to laugh at most of the jokes.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
A friend spoiled me for the beginning and I was very grateful to her.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Me too OP.

Been less than a year since I lost my mom and I really really wish I'd known about that going in. It didn't completely ruin the rest of the movie, but it definitely soured me towards it some.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
I knew we were getting some sort of scene at the beginning which would lead to Peter's abduction into the GOTG universe we see in the rest of the film, but was not expecting such a heavily emotional scene. It didn't ruin the film for me, but I can completely understand why it would throw other people out of it. I'm very sorry OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 02:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I got emotional/weepy at that part but only because it was an emotional scene and not due to personal experience. I gotta say though, that little kid fucking stole the movie a bit. They should give out awards for people who are in a movie less than 10 minutes and still somehow have a huge impact that sticks with you better than characters that were in the film for the rest of the two hours.
