Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

So if they hate each other, why do they bother interacting so much? It's never said they hate each other. :( They spar in a place that clearly isn't Garden and after being knocked out, Squall is suddenly in the infirmary, he has to have gotten there somehow. >>;
I totally like Squall/Rinoa too, but I'm not so fond of their relationship in-game (more so in fanfic). Too tacked on

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

(Anonymous) 2007-12-11 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Because Seifer's honorable and wouldn't let his rival freeze to death or have to drag his bleeding ass back to Garden after waking up. Towards the end of the game I'm pretty sure it was very hate, but that was more 'cause Seifer had gone batshit!Insane and decided to help Ultimecia destroy the world and all. >_>

Although I do agree that Rinoa was way too clingy, I figure it was just stress though.

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see anyone doing that for a person they hate. :/
Batshit!insane and I tend to lean toward (at least partially) possessed by Ultimecia. :3
I think that Squall was more occupied with doing the 'right' thing, as it was shoved into his lap, than being focused on fighting Seifer or even caring about what Seifer was doing.

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

(Anonymous) 2007-12-11 08:13 pm (UTC)(link)
At the start of the game I don't think it was hate, just a very fierce rivalry.

Full agreement there, partial mind control or at least mental influence over a fair amount of what he did. More like driving him to such confusion and insanity he had no other choice but to follow her, he sure as hell sounded nuts every time he rambled before they fought. Possibly, but to that end Seifer was the bad!guy whom they had to plow through to get at Ulti.

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I... I really like the characters and stuff in FFVIII, but I've always been disappointed in the plot and, most of all, the bad guys. Ultimecia has ZERO depth and Seifer is just... it's like they needed a bad guy and he just happened to be there.

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

(Anonymous) 2007-12-11 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
The villains were decidedly devoid of interesting. The characters were mostly good, there were too damn many holes in the plot, and Seifer made a good badguy only because you could pick apart his character and motives for hours afterwards!

They were trying way too hard to push the badness plot though.

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
And they did it twice in a row too. *still not happy over Necron appearing from out of fucking nowhere*. :/

I suppose Seifer did have that whole dreaming thing going for him, but yes, a little less cramming "THEY'REEVILEVILEVILEVIL" down our throats and a little more plot and motives and such and it would've been a million times better.

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

(Anonymous) 2007-12-11 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol god Necron. Damn them and their nonsensical plot devices!

Yeah, that's why I go for the "Ultimecia twisted his dreams into a psychotic break and made him a poor crazy minion". Uh... elaborated better than that it works pretty well and I can at least explain why he did what he did, why she did? Hell if I know she's just nuts.

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It was fine with Kuja and Garland and then there's suddenly this huge ass FLYING thing that's fucking hard to beat and it comes from out of EFFING NOWHERE. ;_;
Someone I know once claimed that there's a lot of hinting at Necron's existence, but he failed to ever actually give me a reason.

I think it's pretty much fact that Ultimecia is a crazy lady. That's what timetravel will do to you.
It's really the only way I see Seifer doing all of it. Like you said, he's honourable. Honourable guys don't do the crap he did unless they're crazy.

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

(Anonymous) 2007-12-11 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
AHAHAHA oh god... yeah they kind of do that a lot don't they? But... I dunno usually they try to explain it, kind of. When SIN randomly started flying that made me go O_o a little too though. I thought SIN was aquatic y'know?

Very crazy. I think she had him convinced he was doing the "right" thing and SeeD was evil, was part of it anyway. What with the locusts speeches and whatnot.

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
And there they never even bothered to.
I think Sin pretty much does whatever the hell it wants to do. I mean, who's going to say no to a huge ball of evil and doom?

Or that she'd make him famous. She'd make people love him and respect him. (I think Seifer's a classic case of a kid who needed a lot of attention and tried to demand it by obnoxious behaviour, but who never got what he wanted and then spiralled out of control).

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

(Anonymous) 2007-12-11 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I sure as hell wouldn't argue with a giant ball of evil and doom.

That too, it was like his Romantic Dream^2. And I got the same impression, he's an attention whore and will do anything to get it, if he can't get it through a positive means he'll be a jackass until he gets it!

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
If you do, you go squish!

And at one point, everybody just started expecting him to be a jackass and then of course he's stuck in that role.
I think that might be one of the reasons he might have dated Rinoa. She didn't know him as a jackass so it may have been a chance for him to not have to act like one.

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

(Anonymous) 2007-12-11 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Mmyep, it's what he was known for so hell why change it eh? And that is a good point, he could be himself with her rather than what he was "supposed" to be around Garden. Hell even the Instructors and various staff expected him to be a loser and an ass. Xu sure as hell wasn't helping matters any.

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Argh, argh, argh, I hate Xu just for that. It's so. Fuck, I don't have words for it. D:
He's trapped in a pattern and she just goes and makes it worse and she's supposed to be a teacher?

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

(Anonymous) 2007-12-11 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly! I mean hell the first time he failed had to be awful for him, rubbing it in and acting like that's all he is? Then yeah he's going to not even bother trying if that's all he's going to get! Or he's going to try too hard and screw it up by playing hero.

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely right. And I still think he should've past, at least in the exam we get to see. Independent thought should be rated so much higher than neatly following orders, but no, they go and fail him on preconceived notions of his behaviour. DD:

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

(Anonymous) 2007-12-11 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, and not following orders to the "T". Which, if you think about it is stupid. SeeD work in small groups on very strange missions with little to no communication with their base, they have to be able to make decisions on their own to figure out what the best course of action is!

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
My thoughts exactly. Besides, it's hard to deny the fact that when he wants to, Seifer has charisma. I think he could even be pretty damn charming. That sort of person makes a wonderful leader. I swear, a little more positive attention and he'd be awesome.

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

(Anonymous) 2007-12-11 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh hell yes, and all things considered he was right about the communication tower, and in any other situation it would have been a good idea to go check it out.

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
But hell if Xu (and the rest of the higher ups) will admit that they were wrong and the problem child was right.
I think it's interesting how this paints Garden as a place with inherent flaws. It's not perfect mercenary high school either.

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

(Anonymous) 2007-12-11 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Which is an interesting spin on the thing, part of why I liked FF8 was the flaws even in the "good guys" system were there, characters and places were a little more real.

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
And that's why I like it so much. Lots of people don't get that. They write it off as the game with the emo kid. ;_;

You know, he always strikes me as a well read person.

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

(Anonymous) 2007-12-11 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Noooes no emo kids ;_; granted my Seifer got a little annoyingly emo. But it was all internal and turned into angry and some self-loathing. This was post-game and he felt like shit about what he did.

Smart definitely, scary smart sometimes. But hmm, I never thought of him that way. Now I am intrigued. I did think he liked to read, but for me it was always fairytales, knights save princesses and whatnot you know?

Re: 1, 8, 34, 39

[identity profile] feywood.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
And that's the big difference right there. Emo is whiny and generally based on nothing. Seifer's... got issues.

Too smart for his own good, maybe.
Ooh, that sounds great and so plausible. He had to get the dreams somewhere, after all.
