I hear you. I really do. As much as I try to avoid yaoi/slash myself, it's just so hard to find good het/gen anywhere, no matter how much I try. I don't hate or resent it so much as it really frustrates me. I seem to be one of the last straight women out there who doesn't "get" the appeal of yaoi/slash and who doesn't find it to be a turn-on. I'm like an anomaly of the internet, and I find it difficult to fit in anywhere because of this. :\

That said...the way some people are reacting to you is really only proving your point about how it's eaten fandom alive. I find it sickening that people are treating you that way, to be honest, and frankly, I don't care what people say to me in response to my sentiment. You're not outright condemning yaoi/slash, you're just frustrated at how it's eaten fandom alive, and yet people are still coming down on you for it and treating you as if you've committed some horrible sin.

Honestly, 18 seems to be getting more invective than 27...

Re: 27

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, 18, while disturbing, actually presents an interesting and somewhat original point of view. Whereas 27, honestly, is just kind of rehashing the same old crap from a million other posts. And, if you would read through some of the comments, you would see that not everyone is 'condemning' 27 for their way of thinking -- just their approach to finding fanwork.

Re: 27

[identity profile] ryuutchi.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, yes. I read them. That's why I was pointing out to the commenter that people aren't really coming down all that hard, all things considered. Mild mocking and rolling their eyes, but not acting like the person has "committed some horrible sin".

Re: 27

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Oops. I might have mashed up the two comments I meant to send. The latter half was directed at the other commenter, sorry.

Re: 27

[identity profile] ryuutchi.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
It's okay. I figured you'd just conflated the two comments. It happens.

27. Firstly, she had to have know that this was going to garner some unpopular opinions. Secondly, I'm not seeing anyone really being harsh about it. No one's telling her to go off and die somewhere and how they hate her. Her argument is kind of redundant and stupid and I used to not like slash either years ago and I dealt with it ... and I was fifteen and handled it with more grace. Thirdly, this is [livejournal.com profile] fandomsecrets. What type of response do you think she was expecting when everytime the het vs slash debate comes up this is how people respond because it's a pointless debate. I don't like certain fandoms, but I don't make a habit out of complaining about how they're ruining everything because I have to sift through ten million pieces of Kingdom Hearts fanart before finding something I personally like.

If you don't like slash then just skip over it. I don't like certain pairings. I just skip them. Yes, it would be all lovely if I could actually find stuff that I liked more often, but that's fandom. As for yaoi and slash ruining fandom, I think in some respects it has elevated it above the realm of Mary Sues. Het rarely involves good canon relationships and themes because so many fangirls already hate the female characters regardless of the fact that they create their own OC. Even gen fics are plagued by this.

It should be noted that I prefer het. I like my canon relationships and my absolute favourite fandom and ship is het. I like yaoi, as well. And yuri. For me it doesn't matter. Now I respect the fact that someone doesn't like yaoi, I know that it doesn't appeal to some people nor do they understand it, however claiming that it's ruining fandom because it's not supplying what you want is a load of bullshit.

Re: 27

[identity profile] marsdragon.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? What I've mostly seen is 'that's some pretty strong language for something relatively minor', 'is it that hard to skip?', and 'dude, given Sturgeon's Law, it's not like we're any better off'. None of those are particularly throat-jumping (anymore so than usual for the internet anyway).

And you know? As someone from a fandom so small in America that I have to translate fic from Japanese, cry moar. Seriously. I try not to begrudge Kingdom Hearts and Doctor Who and anything else popular, even though if I go anywhere where fandoms mix those have generally eaten everything alive. My fandoms tend to be so tiny I'm lucky if there's a fandom past me, my friends that I got into it, and a bunch of fanboys on 4chan (who hate anything smacking of fangirl with a passion, so it's not like I don't understand not fitting in), but I don't bitch about it to a bunch of people who don't care and wouldn't be in my fandoms anyway.

Seriously, what do you want the yaoi lovers to do about it? Write what you want instead of what they want because you're special? I like yaoi but I mostly end up writing gen, and even so that attitude pisses me off. If you think yaoi's "eaten the fandom alive", then write some gen/het/yuri/whatever, try to find some friends that like it, and form your own community. Just whining about it on F!S isn't going to get you any more of what you want to see.

This is probably going to come off as me telling you you've committed some "horrible sin", and it's not really intended like that. I do find the attitude "you should write what I want, not what you want!" annoying, but it's not a sin. (Even with my big words up there, I have privately lamented the lack of ...anything, really, in my fandoms before) If I'm coming down on you for anything, it's for that attitude, not for not liking yaoi, because I really couldn't care less what you like. I hope that's clear. (what is probably more clear is that I talk too much)

But I don't want anything. Mostly my reason for making this secret was frustration. And now I've said something, I can and will get on with skipping all those yaoi fics and trying to find something I want to read, mildly happier in the knowledge that at least I got to admit that yes, I dislike yaoi in a fairly public place.

:)

Usually when I complain about something (There aren't any fanfics for my fandom in English and moonspeak is hard!) I want conditions to change so my complaint is no longer valid (There are fics in English/I understand Japanese perfectly with no effort!). But that's me.

Re: 27 (OP)

(Anonymous) 2007-12-12 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
But things aren't going to change, no matter what I do. I can't make myself learn to like yaoi, and yes, I could write my own, but that wouldn't change the vast majority of fandom apparently being yaoi. And I cannot really write, so the amount of good het/gen fic wouldn't change at all.

Re: 27 (OP)

[identity profile] marsdragon.livejournal.com 2007-12-12 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
The amount of fic-writing English-speaking SRW fans isn't going to suddenly change either, and I'm not going to wake up one morning with spontaneous fluent knowledge of Japanese (I wish).

I can understand the acceptance, it's just when you said that you didn't want the situation to change, it felt odd. And I wouldn't worry about being bad at writing, for two points:

1. You get better with practice, assuming you're willing to learn. I look back on everything I ever wrote and cringe, but the early mistakes help me learn to write better (assuming I ever stop being lazy and actually write some more). Reading helps too.

2. Since when has sucking stopped someone from being popular? Even if it's bad, you might attract some similarly minded people, and from there you can found your own little community of people who like het/gen. It's not hopeless.

Re: 27

[identity profile] alicornmoon.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
What I hate more than anything is the idea that if you are a 'grown up' you must like slash no matter what :P. Having an open mind and actually liking reading slash are two different things...

Re: 27

[identity profile] klytaemnestra.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)

27. I haven't seen anyone making that argument around here and that's clearly just your own assumption. That said, no one cares that she doesn't like slash. I respect that. What's ridiculous is the fact that she has such an issue with it because she can't find anything she likes as if others are supposed to be doing what she wants in fandom.

My advice to her is to stop whining and write for herself. I'm in a small practically inactive fandom. That's what I have to do and I don't go around whining about how I can't find anything I like or if I do find something for the fandom it's from one of the games I don't even enjoy usually.

Re: 27

[identity profile] alicornmoon.livejournal.com 2007-12-11 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
It might be :) Oh well, the world would be boring if everyone agreed...
*hee*
the ' you must be the change you want to see in the world' factor is good for writing fanfic :)

Re: 27 (OP)

(Anonymous) 2007-12-12 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
People have actually been pretty nice to me, considering it's a yaoi-dislike secret. Cry Moar is fair enough, I guess. Although I do wonder how many cry moar people are yaoi fans? And I wonder how many of them get that I ranted to get it off my chest and move on?

I realise being anon kind of kills it, but we can be straight females who don't get it together, right? :)

The problem is, if 90% of fanfic is yaoi and 90% of fanfic is also bad, that doesn't leave much good het/gen. And it really cuts down on the chances of finding awesome fic with a storyline you actually want to read. *moar sighs*

Thanks for standing up for me, though. I appreciate it.
