I don't understand what you mean by "canonically" straight. Why does being attracted to women mean you can't be attracted to men? There are bisexuals and pansexuals after all.

I understand the issue of a character being married more (I'm not a fan of cheating personally), but I don't see how loving a woman would preclude a character from loving a man. Or vice versa.

They might mean the character has explicitly stated that they are straight? idk

I'm not a fan of ships that break up marriages either, but that has exactly nothing to do with the sexuality of the characters in question. It just squicks me, that's all.

Well, there are characters who are canonically straight in the sense that they have said "I am straight" or something to that effect (John Egbert comes to mind immediately), but I don't think that's the case for most of them.
