I don't understand what you mean by "canonically" straight. Why does being attracted to women mean you can't be attracted to men? There are bisexuals and pansexuals after all.

I understand the issue of a character being married more (I'm not a fan of cheating personally), but I don't see how loving a woman would preclude a character from loving a man. Or vice versa.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
They might mean the character has explicitly stated that they are straight? idk

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I was thinking that too.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

I'm not a fan of ships that break up marriages either, but that has exactly nothing to do with the sexuality of the characters in question. It just squicks me, that's all.

Well, there are characters who are canonically straight in the sense that they have said "I am straight" or something to that effect (John Egbert comes to mind immediately), but I don't think that's the case for most of them.

at least half of the fic in this fandom is elizabeth/peter/neil

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
Well, as a fan, that's a little icky for me. I get it in theory.

There's definitely some intense emotional connection between the main cast. I friendship Moz/Elizabeth really hard, myself.

But I don't really want to think very much about Peter having sex with anyone. So there's that.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 08:07 pm (UTC)(link)
If Elizabeth wasn't in the picture, I'd probably be all over that pairing, but she is, and somehow I just can't cut her out. I know a lot of people in this fandom solve that by threesomes, but that just doesn't work for me, not in this case.

Yeah, same for me. :(

I think part of it is that Peter and El's relationship is so darn sweet and happy. I'm forever glad that I haven't yet encountered a fic of her being villianized or anything. She's just so freaking great.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, Elizabeth is amazing, and she and Peter have one of the TV marriages out there. :) I'm glad to hear there's no Elizabeth bashing going on in fic.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
^ one of the best TV marriages... Left out a word. *facepalm*

Yup, that's exactly how I am. I don't watch anymore, but back when I did I loved the thought of Peter/Neal. They had fantastic chemistry, but Elizabeth was just too awesome and good with Peter to ignore or break them up, and I never got the Neal/Elizabeth angle.

So I ended up just loving Peter/Elizabeth, and thinking that if things were different (I.E. Peter had never met Elizabeth, which is a pretty depressing thought tbh) Peter/Neal would totally be a thing.

(And yes, I'm aware neither character is shown to be bi, but whatever.)

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I completely agree. And yes, I just can't buy the Neal/Elizabeth angle either - I think that's my biggest hangup with the threesome.

I guess I can see them all in a fully informed V-relationship centered on Peter, but so far I haven't found good fic for that.

This is funny to me, because Elizabeth/Peter/Neal is literally the only threesome I have ever shipped.

Peter/Neal only works for me in AUs where Peter and Elizabeth never married.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll always be a little mad there was never an episode (at least to my knowledge) where they had to go undercover as a couple.

[personal profile] santacabezaqueen 2014-09-06 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
There hasn't been. The closest type thing was Diana and Neal posing as a couple for an episode, which was actually one of my favorites. I was very glad they didn't try to make Diana swing both ways, but the idea of her telling Neal she'd not date him even if she were straight made me giggle... Because she does like the guy, just not that way.

I also don't think they've ever been misconstrued as lovers.

There was an episode where Neal pretended to be Peter because a contact was going to bail if "Peter" didn't show up fast, and then he and El were fake!married for most of the episode while Peter was pretending to be Neal.

I love to ship m/m, but I can't with them. I don't like Peter for Neal.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-06 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I love the show, I love the relationships in it, but it doesn't work for me as any romantic subtext.

I think my subconscious sees it more as a father/son dynamic, even though their ages aren't far enough apart. Neal needs Peter in a way that fits that dynamic better for me. And I think that he would completely deny that and be hugely offended! But it feels like it's there underneath their push-pull friendship and working relationship, to me. He really needs Peter in deep ways that don't feel sexual/romantic to me.

I do love Peter's wife (I can never remember how to spell her name) but tbh I'm not sure if the pairing would work for me if she didn't exist. (And the world would be a sadder place if she didn't!)

P.S. Have you ever watched any YouTube bits that show the two actors interacting? It is so sweet you will smile for DAYS. They clearly love each other to bits and feel so safe together. <3 And they unashamedly HUG!

Pssst It's called bisexuality

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-09-06 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I mean, if you're just unable to ship this because one of the characters is married and you can't do threesomes, that's one thing.

But, liking women doesn't preclude someone from liking men. Hell, you can mostly like women and only occasionally even be interested in men, that still counts.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
You can't but you do. Therefore, you can.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
Infidelity ruins any pairing for me, but I'd much rather someone make a straight character bi than a canonically gay character.
