If you take off the Young, you could easily be talking about what Brian Michael Bendis did to the overall Avengers.

NAYRT

Don't think Bendis has ever made the fandom toxic, but he does have a tendency to ignore continuity, particularly old continuity, to write the story/characters the way he wants to; see Avengers Disassembled and the Scarlet Witch. Also his run on Guardians of the Galaxy did change a lot of Star-Lords personality as well, but that obviously isn't Avengers.

You're not alone here. Gillen's series came across as pretty shallow and pretentious...which is sort of his stock in trade.

I liked Miss America and Loki... but hated what he did to the original Young Avengers.

Didn't care much about Noh Varr, either.

I loved Miss America, really enjoyed David Alleyne and Loki had some good moments too, but overall...yea, I greatly preferred the original YA's run. The art, the writing, the team...everything.

However, I definitely didn't hate it like a lot of people seem to. *shrugs*

well, he did have that whole plotline where he was revealed to be a Skrull who was heir to the empire and all the drama that went along with that, but you're right that his character development was pretty neglected overall

Sounds like you need to read all the stuff that came before Children's Crusade. CC was very much Wiccan's story. And really I'd say the X-men and Avengers were more at fault for most of the crap that went down in that story. Trying to keep Wiccan captive, Wolverine trying to kill him, showing up and demanding to take the Scarlet Witch with them. The Young Avengers deserved that promotion long before CC happened anyway.

I'd make the distinction that he's defined by being Billy's boyfriend, but not by the fact that he's gay, if that makes sense.

CC was a goddamn mess. I prefer the original run of YA and their team-ups with the Runaways to everything that came out after that.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly no. It's always sort of been Billy's story. Even Hulking's personality seems to try and cater to what Billy wants (that might not even be what he actually looks like, because he's a shapeshifter) -- the Young Avengers mini where they went into their backgrounds did a better job. I think he has the potential to be really interesting and the new run almost kind of explored that by having them break up, but he's kind of the stereotypical "girlfriend" of the group role (which for the blonde, hulky character is kind of funny).

Children's Crusade is... not good.

The original YA run is a lot of fun, but both Children's Crusade and Gillen's recent run are hot messes.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate it, too. Most of all, I hate the redesign and the fact that it felt a lot like the author just used the YA as a convenient background to continue with his kid-Loki stuff. And that's incredibly annoying.

It's really bad. America is a good character, but I'm not a fan of anything else in it.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
You're not alone, both in hating it and not feeling like you can say you hate it.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I only read through Young Avengers Presents, but I really don't understand the love for the original run. Maybe it's because I didn't read any original Avengers comics first, but I just couldn't get invested at all.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
... so I'm the only one who loved the new run?

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah. Don't get me wrong, it had issues (Kate was so sidelined, Tommy getting written out, Noh-Varr and just that one line about "oh hey we fought you once" and no-one ever bringing it up again), but I honestly kind of liked it. It was a fun read, even if it was basically the Loki/Billy/America show. And at least it sort of tried to give Teddy some time away from Billy. As much as those guys are cute, it was nice to see at least some acknowledgement Billy does actually need Teddy as much as Teddy seems to need Billy.

I liked it a lot too. It's actually one of my current favorites. xD
