Sailor Moon Episode Five: Sailor Jupiter

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I forgot the show came back today, but the episode is up!

I think I like Mako's transformation the best so far. There's something so elegant about the way her hands are animated.

I loved everything about this episode. I loved Jupiter going OFF at the end with her attacks.

Makoto's hands were elegant, but I loved the sheer force with which she grabs her henshin pen in her transformation. It's so like her.

I thought this episode was probably the best yet, although I was a little sorry that Usagi's use of the Disguise Pen from the manga wasn't present in this episode.

I'm sad to say I think I'm done with the show. It's just not my thing, I might be blinded by nostalgia goggles, idk. But the art is still shit, and the characters have no discernible personalities. Everyone is so generic. And everything is All About Usagi All the Time.

I'm on the same boat as you, honestly. I really wanted to like the show so so so much, but I've been disappointed by how bland most of the characters have come across so far. It's a damn shame; I remember them being such a lively bunch!

Gaah, and I was really looking forward to Makoto's introduction. She's my favorite of the Inner Senshi, but something about her felt... off.

Yeah, I comfort myself that I have 200ish episodes of the original anime that I love, and PGSM, which also holds a place in my heart, so it isn't that big a deal that this version is falling so flat for me. I'm even usually a fan of a tighter story, but I feel like Crystal has just neglected the spirit of the girls.

Rei is my favorite, and I am SORELY disappointed by what I've seen of her, but Makoto was my second favorite and my problem with her in Crystal is that she just lacked...spark (sorry not sorry). My Makoto would never give up. The world might knock her around and serve her nothing but shit, but my Makoto would respond by charging in to save Sailor Moon and punching Zoicite in the face. Not this Makoto who needed Usagi to make a speak about herself (WTF?) in order to get up and fight again.

Plus, I miss Supreme Thunder.

Saaaaaaame. The original was not without its faults (especially the dubs, dear lord), but I feel like it did a better job of giving the girls more personality. I mean, I know that we're only on episode 5 of Sailor Moon Crystal, but compared to other shows with 26 episode runs that I've watched, the characters in this feel really hollow.

And oh god, Rei... I miss fiery Rei a lot. :CC

Yeah, the original definitely had flaws like the entirety of SuperS but at least I felt like I was watching fully fleshed out characters, not these pretty, perfect cutouts of people. I don't want my Sailor Scouts to be interchangeable.

Is it just me or did the animation quality improve drastically the last couple episodes? During the first few I was all "oh poor thing what happened to your face" at everyone, but I just kept thinking with the last couple "omg you're all so prettyyyyyyy~"

I apparently have lots of nostalgia for the Jupiter henshin, because the way she was holding her hands during the new one made me have one of those "!!!! THAT'S RIGHT!" moments.

Wasn't Jupiter supposed to be the tomboy one. What is even masculine about her besides her large stature and eye-rolling strength. She's borderline a Yamato Nadeshiko. And hey, there's that thing again! "No one likes me because they're too ~intimidated~"

Jupiter's voice is great. Jupiter is boring though. I don't know how you can have a cast of characters so Mary Sue-ish and still so boring and flat. The only not boring character is Usagi, and boy she's starting to grate on the nerves. Almost stepping in front of a car is Too Dumb To Live territory, when she finally becomes a amazing savior I highly doubt it's going to feel earned. She's just special because she IS.

I get the feeling that this episode especially deviated from the manga's writing because its pacing was really fucked up.

Nope, there's only a few changes from the manga. That being...the whole speech Usagi gives and the not killing off Nephrite. Also, no Usagi as a groom bit, lol

Re: Sailor Moon Episode Five: Sailor Jupiter

That's because they're following the manga where damn near everyone other than Usagi was kinda flat. And no, the manga istelf is rather fast paced which doesn't help when it comes to fleshing out such a large cast of characters.

Yeah, I think I've been giving Takeuchi too much credit this entire time. I mean, I've been giving the cliche-ness a pass but it's becoming too much. Like gee, I wonder how they're gonna win this time? Is it. The power of friendship????

Re: Sailor Moon Episode Five: Sailor Jupiter

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oh boy, don't expect much. You know how in the old anime she defeats Beryl and What's her face with her friends (They're dead in the Japanese version)? Nope, in the manga she does it with Mamoru and the power of love while the other scouts dick around in the snow. She gets her next wand from just being with Mamoru, too, instead of from Queen Serenity.

Re: Sailor Moon Episode Five: Sailor Jupiter

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
In the first anime, the spirits of her dead friends helped her defeat Queen Beryl. Which was preferable to what happened in the manga imo.

HAHAHA I almost typed "the power of love" apparently that would've been more apt.

Honestly the last episode was so tepidly feminist I'm beginning to think the people who worship SM as a feminist icon are full of hot air. I'm also beginning to think the old anime made Sailor Moon as a whole what it is to so many people. Takeuchi almost sounds like a bad writer but I'll reserve judgement on that front.

Re: Sailor Moon Episode Five: Sailor Jupiter

Ayrt

Maybe. There's the fact that Sailor Moon is over twenty years old and many of the tropes that appeared in it are really overdone in anime/manga now.

The original manga run of Sailor Moon was only fifty two chapters and with such a large cast of characters in such a short run, most of them were underdeveloped. Didn't help that Naoko just kept adding characters.

Sailor Scout/Generals thing

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
And yet another general doesn't bite the dust. I think it's interesting that they added in a scene where Nephrite remembers Mako-and that whole 'We all have someone we're destined to be with!' speech Usagi gives, which are both not in the manga. I'm starting to wonder if the rumor really is true.

Re: Sailor Scout/Generals thing

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I still hope not, I'm not really interested in the senshi/generals thing at all. I'd rather they focus on the generals relationships with each other and Mamoru then anything.
