I think that people should have the freedom and ability to make whatever choice is best for themselves in that position, and that conservative men should stop being given such a loud voice in the conversation.

I hate this argument. Men have just as much right to comment on this as women. Contrary to what you may believe, the issue is about who has a right to life. And everyone can get a say in that.

nayrt

As a man, I think there are two related but different issues with abortion, not only right to life. There's right to life for all, and also bodily autonomy for all. Narrowing it down to simply right to life and nothing else like anon is doing is ignoring half the problem.

If I were capable of getting pregnant - thru accident or whatever - and everyone insisted that I give 9 months of my body to a baby and deal with all the medical issues and bills associated with it... I'd say hell no, and take whatever options I had to get out of that, legal or illegal, safe or dangerous. No random other person can demand that I loan my body to them for 9 months, and for good reason.

sa

I forgot to add: I agree about the male voices thing. I tend not to get involved in abortion politics because I don't feel I have much of a place in them, being unable to get pregnant. Women should have a stronger voice because of the bodily autonomy thing I mentioned above, because it involves them more than anyone else. That was my original point that got lost somewhere in there.

Well then we work out the bugs on fetal transplant technology and artificial wombs, then men can have a say. Until then the only person who should get a say is the pregnant woman who is seeking one. If you are concerned about the tight to life, go protest the death penalty or illegal wars instead.

So is it your contention, then, that an organization that opposed the death penalty and illegal wars would have a consistent and legitimate basis to oppose abortion on right to life grounds?

Nope. They are just things men can do instead, since they have skin in those games.

i'm realllllllly not comfortable with this argument, for two reasons

first, on general principle, i think that most or all political and moral issues are accessible to everyone. not just this. it's hard for me to think of a counterexample. i think there's a lot of cases where you have to be profoundly careful not to let your biases dictate your response and have to pay real attention to those who have experiences you lack. but you have a responsibility to come to a moral judgment.

second, i think it erases the women who are pro-life, and they do exist.

I didn't say that they shouldn't be allowed to contribute at all, I said they should stop monopolising the conversation.

Men won't stop having a voice in the conversation until we KILL ALL THE MEN!
