I realize this an extremely touchy subject for some, so I ask that everyone remains civil and withdraw from the conversation if it turns personal.

Before anyone calls troll, the reason I ask is because there are aspects that I sympathize with on both sides of the debate and I think asking here, where everyone can comment anonymously, might give me a better view into the debate than if I were to ask somewhere where usernames are required.

I won't hesitate to ask case to freeze this thread if things turn sour.

I'm not here to tell people what they can do with their bodies. They're free to do whatever they feel fit.

I am not for it for myself but I believe everyone should have the right to have access for it. It's a personal choice.

Politically, I believe it should be a matter for the individual to decide. I think the moral questions involved are too complex and recondite for it to be a matter for black and white laws, and I think the principle of personal freedom is too important. I also don't believe, on a personal level, that it's deeply morally wrong.

That said, I'm sometimes unsure whether the current framework for its legality in America is the best way to go. I think there are many ways in which it would be better if it was a matter of popular determination, instead of a judicial conclusion. It's such an important matter to so many people, and such a basic and fundamental ethical question, that I think it should be decided democratically. But we live in the world that we have, I guess.

I always thought that if we had to have some sort of restrictions on abortion, it should be something like that Texas law around the Roe v. Wade trial where 1st trimester abortion was fine, 2nd was iffy/really dependent on certain things (can't remember what exactly what the requirements for it were) and 3rd trimester was a no-go (I mean I get indecisiveness, but if you wait until the 3rd trimester to get an abortion, like, really?) (Also not sure if I made this law up or not, but I'm pretty sure it was a law somewhere in the US around that time). But I've always been pro-choice, so I guess take what I just said for what it's worth?

Better to abort than to have a kid you don't want and can't raise, thereby either giving it a shit home life or dumping it with the hundreds of millions of parentless kids in shitty foster care systems.

I sound harsh, but I think people are too squeamish about it.

My own deeply personal thoughts are that it should be the last recourse. I don't see it as taking a life, but it's still taking away the potential, so I think it should really be a final recourse.

However. It's none of my business what another woman chooses. In the actual position of being pregnant, I might decide differently. It's not my body. It's not anyone's body but that woman's. So it's not for me to judge. I can have the thoughts I do, but I would never, EVER project them on anyone else. If a woman told me she aborted, I would accept that she'd made her decision and had her own personal reasons for it. I'm rather certain I probably do know at least one woman who has aborted, and don't even realize it.

So yes. I'm pro-choice.

incredibly mixed. I'm against it and find it morally reprehensible because I do feel fetuses are human. at the same time, I absolutely understand why people do it, and I feel incredibly uncomfortable with the pro-life movement. (it doesn't help that my mother had a miscarriage before I was born--one that I irrationally feel blame for since I wouldn't have been conceived if it hadn't have happened--and that since I have PCOS I'll probably have difficulty having biological children, which I really want, so I have a lot of irrational emotions tied up with fertility.)

overall I would never, ever choose abortion for myself, even if it meant my death. but I can see why someone else would. I can see why it might be better for it to be legal and regulated rather than unregulated and dangerous. but then that feels like legally sanctioning murder to me and that makes me feel sick to my stomach...

ugh. i just feel like there's no good solution so i'm getting to where i just hate both sides.

I believe that it would not be moral to ban abortion in the first trimester. That is to say, I think there are circumstances where having an abortion would be better than having a child you're unable to care for, and I don't think the law should be involved in making that decision.

I've deliberately avoided having an opinion on when abortion is moral and when it's immoral. I'd much rather leave that argument to folks who're considering abortions.

I think that people should have the freedom and ability to make whatever choice is best for themselves in that position, and that conservative men should stop being given such a loud voice in the conversation.

I think it should be legal and available for everyone, although after 20 weeks or so it should be limited to the cases where the mother's life is in danger or the fetus has developmental issues.

I personally do not believe I would have one, but then thankfully I have been lucky enough never to have been in a position to have to make that choice. I do believe they should be freely available for the women (and transmen) who do need/want them though. They certainly should be made available without moral judgement, because, as we've proven, that is a fucking slippery slope.

Damn. Okay, so, for one thing, I think that everyone gets to make their own choice about it, period. If you don't think you're ready to raise a child, then you're not doing the kid any favors by having it anyway. And there are a billion possibilities out there that make me leery of going, no, you cannot do this or that or whatever. People know their situations better than I do.

That said, fetuses feel and respond to pain/light pretty early. That's enough to make me leery about at what point, exactly, I'm going to decide it's pretty much a person and not just a collection of cells. I don't know where the line is, and I'm not comfortable drawing it at this week or that week, for myself.

It's a personal choice and no one has the right to take that away from the woman in question.

I can't imagine it ever being an option for me, unless the pregnancy would put my life at serious risk, but that's my choice and I should have the freedom to make it myself.

I do think that there should be a limit for how long into the pregnancy an abortion can be done. I'm not an expert on pregnancies, but what an someone mentioned above sounds reasonable to me: 1st trimester okay, 2nd trimester depending on the circumstances, 3rd trimester no.

I have no right to make decisions about other women's bodies. I am pro-choice. I don't think I could ever have an abortion but you know what? I don't know the future and at some point, I could be in the position where I might need or want to have an abortion.

Abortion needs to be legal and safe for any woman that wants one.

I believe that abortion is something that anyone should be allowed to choose what is best for their individual situation, and that it is their choice and you shouldn't judge anyone on it. So be for it, or be against it, but it is your choice someone else should be free to choose differently.

I also believe it should be as close to free as it can be, safe and available close to your home as possible and information should be readily available for anyone who have a need for it, just like birth control (pills/condoms/whatever), sexual education and whatever the heck else you need to know to make informed decisions about/around sex, STDs and pregnancy. So pretty much the way it is here.

On a personal level, I don't know, I have never had to choose, but out of the two times I thought I was pregnant the first time i would have had an abortion and the second time I don't think I would, but I never had to choose so I don't know...

I'm pro-choice. While I'm not sure an abortion is something I'd consider for myself, outside of danger to my health or life or a severely deformed fetus/fetus that won't likely survive until birth, I don't want the option taken away because who knows what the future holds? I certainly don't want it taken away from other women, either, because pretty much every conceivable circumstance is bound to happen to someone and I can't sit here as someone not experiencing those circumstances and and like I have a say when I honestly don't know how I might react in the same situation.

As for the other side of the debate, I actually have far more respect for people who would not make exceptions for rape because at least they're being consistent. If abortion is murder, I fail to see how a pregnancy resulting from rape would change that. Making an exception for rape is just admitting the real issue is women's sexuality and wanting to punish women for voluntarily having sex outside of a traditional marriage (as if all traditional marriages can support an unlimited number of children and pregnancy at any random time is never a problem). It's saying, "well, if you didn't want to have sex, then I guess you shouldn't be burdened with this pregnancy" and somehow that's okay, even if it would be murder otherwise.

I think this is why we get politicians saying things like "legitimate rape" can't cause pregnancy. They're torn between prioritizing the belief that abortion is murder and the belief that women's sexual activity needs to be policed and controlled (or torn between constituents who have these different priorities), so they decide to believe that rape can't cause pregnancy or that any sex that leads to pregnancy couldn't really be rape so that they don't have to worry about it.

I can't respect a lack of exceptions if the mother's life or health is in danger. People who are already born also have a right to life and to a decent quality of life with regards to their health.

I think it's very important that everyone be given the right to choose do what they want with their bodies. It's a very serious and personal choice for every person who is facing such a big ordeal.

Personally for me, I don't think I could ever go through with it myself, but I've never been put in such a position so I honestly wouldn't know how I would really feel or decide. I guess I just hope to never have to make such a decision. But I would prefer to have the right to make a decision rather than not have a say in what I want to do.

I don't think I'll ever have one even though I don't want kids. But that is my personal choice for my own body, and I support every woman's ability to make that choice for herself.

I also think viability is a good framework. If it has the chance of living outside her body, it is a human being and should be given that chance. Until then, it is her body and she shouldn't be forced to do anything with it she doesn't want to.
