(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)Childbirth is still a killer of women, even in western nations plus even carrying the fetus has life long effects on a woman's health and life. The nine months of hosting it are not a breeze.

And yes, I will put my name on a post where I say the life of an adult woman is worth more than the life of a premature fetus, given a choice between the two. A lot more.
(But that's a big part of why I'm not really interested in trying too hard to force women to continue pregnancies when they don't want to do so. I don't want to have to lock a woman up and force-feed her folate....)

There are people out there who are willing to adopt. I do wish America did a better job of educating potential parents about the benefits of adoption, and pushing the possibility of adopting a child within the foster care system.

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)99% of the reasons for abortions right there. If you aren't prepared to do so, then you are a class a hypocrite for demanding those other women go through the body and psyche wrecking process of pregnancy whether they end up adopting out or not.
(frozen comment) Re: What are your thoughts on abortion?
(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)Some people seem to think women get abortions on a whim, and that is absolutely not the case. Even legal abortions have consequences and take time, but that is far preferable to being forced to give birth to a kid you don't want.
(frozen comment) Re: What are your thoughts on abortion?
I don't want to be a single mother, so I use contraceptives. If those fail, then I have the option of putting the child up for adoption.
Like I said, when I get married then my husband and I will seriously consider adoption.
(frozen comment) Re: What are your thoughts on abortion?
(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)Especially in the last few weeks/months, depending on how the pregnancy goes, you literally have to plan your life around the pregnancy. You have to stop working, it literally changes you (mood swings, intolerance to certain foods or smells, cravings, a thing you don't want literally growing inside you and feeding off of you), the pain and nausea, the list goes on. From a certain stand-point, a woman is basically held prisoner by the baby, forced to do things she wouldn't do if it weren't for the baby. Why is that alright?
And if you say that everyone has a right to live, what about condoms? What about the life that could have been had that one sperm not been caught in the condom, but reached the egg? Are you against the morning after pill as well, or doesn't that matter as the baby is still only a handful of cells at that point?
(Please note, though I am pro-choice I can't imagine me ever getting an abortion. I'm not attacking you, I'm genuinely curious.)
(frozen comment) Re: What are your thoughts on abortion?
Nine months out of the sixty plus years most of us can expect to live is not that big of a deal. We all do plenty of things we don't want to do every single day. Saying 'Oh, I don't want to do something' doesn't make any difference when there's someone's life on the line.
(frozen comment) Re: What are your thoughts on abortion?
(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)I suppose the big difference here is when (general) you think the life starts. Just as I don't think the couple of formed cells the morning after constitute a life I don't think a fetus of a couple of weeks constitues a life either, though that view may be largely influenced by the fact that miscarriage are very common on my father's sister-in-law's side of the family.
Yet if it wasn't a baby, but another adult taking the woman hostage for nine months and forcing her to do things against her will she would be allowed to defend herself. It's not saying "I don't want to do something", it's not having a choice - a pregnancy changes a woman, whether she wants it or not. When my body deforms and I can't do things like my own job anymore that has nothing to do with what I want or not, because these things are entirely outside of my control.
(frozen comment) Re: What are your thoughts on abortion?
I'm willing to accept that a couple of cells joined together are not a human being. I'm not willing to accept that someone with a heartbeat is not.
