To beat a dead horse, Sailor Moon Crystal.

Yep. Still disappointed.

Yeah, this. I don't think the character designs for the guys are that bad though. I think the style works for the male characters. But not so much for the female characters.

I think the character designer is better with men for sure, but that's not a good thing when we're talking about a series with primarily female characters.

Especially if they get to later story arcs where there are even less men. Like Stars? All women.

I think Makoto is the only one who benefits somehow. It's like her ponytail kind of balances out the huge eyes, where the other girls' (Rei in particular) just has their hair emphasize it.

+1000 It's not just that I find them unappealing, but they were just also a very bad choice of character design if they were going to end up being so cheap with the animation. They should have done designs that were easier to animate on a limited budget/timetable.

I'm really not loving the computer aided "traditional" animation. I don't mean the 3D-esque CG, I mean like the new DC animated movies where the shadows and skin tones are all computer simulated. It just does not look right to me.

Moe anime girls where they have that freaking vampire or cat tooth. STOP IT WTF.

Re: character design you hate

(Anonymous) 2014-09-07 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Does this count if they *are* catgirls/vampires/demons?

Nah, I let it slide then. Haha.

yeah, what the hell is up with that tooth? it makes me think they have one crooked/sideways tooth that's supposed to be cute somehow.

Ume Aoki's art. I don't hate her art, but those wide faces are just not appealing to me. Her character designs are one of the reasons I've not watched Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

I've never liked Akira Toriyama's art style.

Style-wise, I hate anime styles where girls have very thick eyebrows and/or their teeth always showing whenever they have their mouth open, like they have an overbite. I don't find it cute and will kindly pass on any recommendation my friends have for me if they suggest an anime featuring that style.

Artist-wise, there are two artists on tumblr whose styles I can't stand to the point I've blacklisted them. Artist A draws huge noses on all their characters and throws sparkles and bows all over everything, Artist B draws a lot of art of my favorite characters, but they are very bad at convincing expressions and make ALL of their eyes look like someone threw glitter into the character's faces by putting little stars everywhere in the irises. Both styles just scream "trying too hard to be cute" and they don't try experimenting with their styles at all.

Could you give an example of the first one? I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about?

Re: character design you hate

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I like defined eyebrows because sometimes they serve to balance out large eyes, and they always show a lot of expression. Sure, I'd like to see variation in a cast's design, but in general I'm in favor of eyebrows.

Doing eyebrows as a miniscule thin line just reads SO dated to me.

So many comics...

(Anonymous) 2014-09-08 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Just the overly-muscular, body-builder physique. Or the Gears of War monstrosities. Half of the reason I can't get into a ton of Western comics is because I find the male superhero design so very, very unappealing. It's also why I prefer the movie versions.

Call me superficial or whatever, but it's the truth...

Every character in Drammatical Murder. The character designs are just too damn busy. Pretty much every character I think I could find appealing if the designer had just stopped at one or two unique touches but no, everyone's got to have a million little weird bits, stupid hats and piercings and some more tattoos and eye-bleeding colors and here's a stupid jacket and stupider hairband and please stop. It looks like every character went through a design randomizer six different times.

Agreed. I also don't like the artist's style/art in general. A pity that Kurahana Chinatsu left Nito+Chiral. I'm glad that she's during well though.

Every character? Because the only one I can think of with a stupid hat and piercings is Noiz. The only other person I can think of with a hat is Sei (unless Haga has one and I don't remember). Aoba, Virus, Trip, Clear, and Mizuki don't have complicated designs (unless you count plaid as busy, then only Trip is out). Koujaku, Virus, Toue, Clear, Sei, and Aoba don't have eyebleeding colors (in which case, you must hate 80's fashion with all the neons). Only Mink has a hairband, as you call it, and Koujaku and Mizuki are the only ones with tattoos, but Mizuki's are minimal.

The Akira Toriyama style is definitely one of those where I have to remind myself to ignore the art and pay attention to the story. It is always a very weird reminder when I haven't looked at the style for a long while. Chrono Trigger is fun though.

I've gotten sick of "Renaissance era" (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast) Disney design as of late. Not the animation, I still find that gorgeous, but the designs have been too overdone to death and so many people do it poorly.

Even some of the animators who worked at Disney back then have gotten on my "Oh god, can't you come up with better designs?" list just because I wish they would grow and they really do some unappealing art because they haven't.

I'm just sick of generic big eyed characters, I wish Disney would experiment around a bit more because they are going back to really generic designs with their cg and I want something more creative.

I love Saint Seiya to pieces, but I much prefer the generic anime look of the anime characters to the way they look in Masami Kurumada's original manga.
