yeah, what the hell is up with that tooth? it makes me think they have one crooked/sideways tooth that's supposed to be cute somehow.

Yeah, that is pretty much it. Due to a genetic quirk many Japanese women have a snaggle tooth, and for reasons I don't fully grasp, its been seized upon as a symbol of cuteness. Its at the point now that Japanese women without a snaggletooth are actually paying for dental work to get one. Not even joking.
Its called Yaeba.

Chalk it up as just another "What the HELL, Japan?".

It's widely considered attractive in my non-Japan Asian country as well. And tbh, I think it is a little cute. Not to the extent I'd get dental work for it, but I feel that way about all cosmetic surgery.
